Prefered rat hunting tool a GPMG!
Failing that a big bit of wood with a few nails poking out of it is normally effective

I think these guys are for hire.
Seriously, if you want to hunt it rather than trap it, try a BB gun. I had to gun down a mouse once because it wouldnt take the bait in my traps, and my cat was to lazey to catch it.

Have you tried a cast-iron frying pan?

Either a BB gun or a .22...muahahahaha.
As for mice....I was in the Fort Smith, AR airport this morning, and as I came down the stairs from the weather room a white mouse (yep, white) ran down the stairs in front of me.
I tried to get the girl behind the counter to catch it, but she refused.....poor line guy...

Aren't guns illegal in the UK?
That would pose a bit of a problem with the BB or 22 solution...
What about a dart gun or a crossbow?

I'm not sure if a BB gun would be considered a firearm, seeing as all it is is a fancy slingshot...

When I lived in ZA we used to catch them, toss them in an open space (like an area where nothing grew) and use them for target practice, it was great fun but seems horribly sadistic when I look back on it.

THe problem with a .22 is that if you miss, you lost your chance. Try a shotgun instead

Use a 12 bore on a rat. That way there's nothing left for you to clean up afterwards. So it's win win.

Get a cat.
Or do what I do every morning to get rid of all my neighbors ****ing cats-run out naked yelling and screaming. <-That always works

Not sure if you can in the UK but my favorite rat hunting weapon is a pellet pistol with a lazer site. Don't get much chance to use it though since we live on a farm and have cats who are death to rodents. Too bad you don't live nearby. We have three cats we'd gladly give to a good home and three kittens who'll some day make great mouse/rat hunters.
These aren't your "housecat" variety kittycats. These come from a long line of hunting farm cats dating back to "Rusty" our first tomcat when we moved out here when I was 10 years old. That one ran off a German Shepherd once.
