A similar thing happened in America when a bunch of engineers went drilling for oil in a lake and ended up hitting an abandoned salt mine underneath. Except that one took a small island and several houses with it.

Imagine if something like that were to happen to one or all of the Great Lakes.

If enough of the Atlantic were to drain into the Carribean, it would cause a major climate shift (as in Siberia-like) for North America and Europe (or so I've read).
