whatever happend to those japanese soldiers who were on an island and still thought they were at war because they hadn't gotten their orders yet?

I've heard this tale more than once before... I think the "stubborn Japanese soldier" thing is sort of the Philippine equivalent of Bigfoot.
Even if they didn't get word of the surrender, you'd think it'd only take a month or so before they wondered why they no longer heard distant guns and hadn't had any orders delivered.
At any rate... 60 years?! Come on...

As most if the reports seem to mention, the Japanese Officer they found in the mid 70s was not convinced until they flew out his former Commanding Officer to prove it...

You beat me to this, Mark.  I don't think they were actually living in caves, but are only afraid of punishment if they go back to Japan.
