Two hurt in mock light sabre duel

Two Star Wars fans are in a critical condition in hospital after apparently trying to make light sabres by filling fluorescent light tubes with petrol.

A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.

The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

A third person present at the incident had been questioned, police said.

Videotape found

A videotape was found nearby by police called to the scene on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said the pair were taken to West Herts Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, in Essex.

They are both said to be in a critical condition.

She said the 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead suffered serious injuries.

She added: "At this stage we are unable to confirm the exact circumstances, but glass tubes and traces of accelerant (flammable substance) were found at the scene."

The final film in the Star Wars series, Revenge Of The Sith, arrived at UK cinemas last week.

Having listened to local Radio whilst driving in Hertfordshire tonight, it should be made clear that the Police ARE NOT linking this to some "Star Wars" prank / mock lightsabre fight etc.

Considering they have a witness (who was the video cameraman ) who confirms this, I feel its just a tad early to jump to conclusion's as the media  - don't they always? - have.

Two people are critical in hospital.

My thoughts are with them & their next of kin.

Whether or not they were copying something they saw at the movies or just messing around, common sense would tell you not to do that.

My point is we don't know exactly what was going on , nor, in what circumstances, but, seem more than happy to have a jolly good laugh......

I don't particularly find two people in hospital with critical burn injuries funny.

I find this discussion in poor taste considering.

Or have none of us ever done something silly thats backfired badly?

Sorry Paul, but fluorescent light tubes filled with petrol is hardly the most intelligent thing to do :P

Having worked in Hemel at one time I have to say that I'm not surprised in the least that someone did something stupid with petrol. People there are the kind that would use a nuclear explosion to cook their sausages ::)
It will be interesting to hear the full story on this, if it is true then these people are rather more than a bit silly....

I've never been a fan of giving sympathy to the stupid.

That said, I've gotta find that tape.

Well, lets see now.  They put gasoline into a flourescent tube, lit it, and didn't think it would explode?  I've done some dumb things in my day, but that one is beyond any stupidity I have ever accomplished...
