An interesting debate

Postby Craig. » Tue May 24, 2005 6:17 pm

Over at the Denver broncos forum we have a debate going on, whether or not its acceptable to curse out a person through a PM and not fear reprocussions from the guys in charge. In this case the guilty party was banned from the website, however a friend of his is pleading the case that because it was a Private message it should be allowed. I will provide a link to make it clearer if people want it. But i just thought it would be interesting to hear others thoughts on this.
Personally i am trying to explain that just because its a pm doesnt make it ok to abuse another member.

I would say no.  There is a deplorable lack of decorum on the internet, and it needs to be discouraged wherever it can.  If you would not walk up to me and cuss me out to my face (for which you would recieve serious hurts) then you shouldn't do it over the web.  The same rules of conversation should apply here as well as everywhere else.

Look at it this way:  If you had a co-worker in a private room at work, would it be any more proper to cuss him out than if you were in a roomfull of people?

GO Broncos!!!

Don't bore me.

I agree.  Just because it's in a PM it doesn't mean it's ok.  If there was any doubt, he should've cleared it up with the mods first.

Off the top of my head, I will vote on the no side. Decorum should be used at all times. Unfortunately, there are those that did not get there head spun around by their Moms when trash came out of their mouths..............OR.........it is only in forums, PMs or IMs that certain individuals all of a sudden grow a pair and talk their trash. CB Rambos they are called in the trucking industry, I guess we would these type individuals...............Forum Rambos.  ;D

In person they are probably barely above.............or below

If a person does wrong over a PM without the intention to abuse than the actus reus as we say in law isn't there. If the person deliberately does it and continues to abuse in any way, doesn't need to be by swearing, then they are guilty of a crime. It doesn't matter if in a real letter or by a Pm.

So what your saying is that if, for instance, I send someone a PM that says "I have to go to the f***ing store" then it isn't against the rules, sense I didnt send it with the intent to abuse. But if I send one that says "your an idiot" then it is a punishable offense? Or would it have to continue with more abusive PMs', or is that up to administor discretion?

Note: I'm not actually considering doing this, if I had a problem with someone here or on any internet forum or chatroom, I would just ignore them.
