Chicago's new "terror Gates"

Postby legoalex2000 » Thu May 19, 2005 12:52 pm

check out this story, i saw it on NBC5 chicago, but found the story on ABC7 chicago

http://abclocal.go.com/wls/news/051805_ ... gates.html

I personally think this is a waste of money. and the fact they are called terror gates is pointless. Wisconsin has hese to regulate traffic during an accident. i think the whole "terror gate" incentive is just for publicity.

mathmatics on this:

$40,000 a gate (which is unbreakable (they will pull a titanic))

they have 1 installed now. they have plans for 80.

that 3.2 million tax dollars wasted i believe. not to mention maintainence costs.

Even though I listen to WLS out of Chicago during the day online, I voted "I don't know" because this is the first I've heard of them...I'll have to read the story later and see what I think.

If they haven't got anything better to waste money on...why not? ::)

Terror gates? sounds scarey.

I think its not a bad idea, but I dont see why they have to be super-strong.

wait until the first lunatic drives a vintage tank right through them...
the weakest link seems to be the part that mounts them to the asphalt / bridge deck

Well, it did happen once in California... disgruntled soldier (?) commandeered a tank and went joyriding through a suburban neighborhood.
As for the gates: not a bad idea for emergency traffic control- currently, cops have to drive out in front of highway traffic to stop it- but I'm tired of our government trying to scare more money out of us.
But it could be worse- they could call them "freedom gates"...  ::)

Yeah, I knew about that. As soon as they'd stopped the tank a policeman got on top, opened the hatch and shot him dead. :P

You already see gates like that all over northern Georgia in case of Hurricanes to direct traffic.  They seem to work fairly well...  8)

Kinda had to... he wouldn't surrender or even let go of the controls (it  had stopped only because he bottomed out on a concrete median, and was busy trying to dislodge it), and they had no way of knowing if he was armed, or if he'd try to operate the big gun. Unfortunately, negotiation or climbing in after him was out of the question.
