An Alitalia flight from Milan has been diverted to Bangor, Maine, and will be escorted in by fighter jets.
The flight, which has 127 aboard, is being diverted because a passenger's name has shown up on a no-fly list.
She should be on the ground within the hour.

Aren't they supposed to stop them, like, before they get on the plane?

It's hard to say since the flight originated outside of the US.

Could easily be mistaken identity. Many names are very similar. I would think it's the ones not on the list we should be concerned with.

That's exactly what this one turned out to be. He had the same name and DOB as someone else. No harm done.

just like pretty much every other flight turned back has been a mistake and the others have never had anything else reported about them. Just like they arrested that old musician and sent him home despite being an ambassador of peace.

And if we let ONE slip because we assume him to be a so-called "ambassador of peace", the public will eat it up.
It's a no win situation. All we can do is err on the side of caution and apologize when we slow someone down.

wasn't a case of slowing them down, they get sent home even after being cleared. This system needs to be fixed and quickly. Theres no reason they cant have the lists ready and cleared before a flight departs. that saves everyone hassle.

Sure, send it to Maine. No one cares about Maine..

Not sure what kind of plane was involved, but if it was coming from Milan to BOS, then it would most likely be a heavy. Bangor is the first airport you get to that can handle a plane that large. (Incidentally, it's also an emergency runway for Space Shuttle ops.)
And yes, it did slow them down. If they got to their destination late, it slowed them down.
To date there hasn't been one successful attack post-9/11. I don't think that's a flawed system at all.

In these kind off situations:
Better safe than sorry
at least that is what I think

There is a saying I heard someplace,
"The enemy only needs to be lucky one time. We need to be lucky everytime!"

In the arab world it's often not the name or surname that defines the person, it's the whole list for about 3-4 generations back or so that gives enough to keep track of who is who

theres only so many times that excuse can be used. Apart from richard reid who was only stopped thanks to passengers and crew, there have been no attempts, yet pleanty of people from news channels/papers who have managed to get many weapons onboard to proove a point. Also was anyone ever caught for all those anthrax attacks? i dont remember but i am pretty sure i dont remember hearing they were. Instead of using an excuse to keep a crap system how about htey use the threat to create a better system. And if a terrorist wanted to do something to a plane and knew they could crash it into a building then you might end up with another lockerbie over the ocean or a large city.
