Don't forget!

Postby Scottler » Fri Apr 01, 2005 8:24 am

For those of you who live in locations where the clock changes, it does so Sunday morning at 0200!

So when you go to bed tomorrow night, set the clocks ahead an hour.  Also don't forget to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors!
Great edit, Bob.

DST is stupid anyway. The only reason it was invented was so farmers would have enough light during the day.. ::)

The origins of DST go back to Benjamin Franklin, but it was only enacted by Congress in the US in 1918 in an effort to save energy to use in WW1.

Now, however, it's more of a traditional thing than anything else.  I'm as traditional as the next guy, but I'd vote this out in a flash.

Lemme clarify...by "tradition" I merely meant that we just sorta do it now without even thinking about it.  There are only three places in the US that don't change their clocks.  Hawaii, Arizona and parts of Indiana.  Other than that, we just all do it.  I really wish they wouldn't though.  I've always said we do it backwards anyway.

If it's getting dark earlier in the winter months, I say we should get the extra hour of daylight (figuratively speaking) THEN, not in the summer when the days are already longer!

Couldn't have said it better myself, leave the clocks alone!!

It can be somewhat confusing for us who live in Michigan which forces it's residents to change the clocks back and forth but work in one of the areas of Indiana which still has the brains to leave the clocks alone.
We just stay on Indiana time, only problem is when we work until 3:30, that is 4:30 in Michigan and it takes us 35-40 minutes to get home, so if you have any business to take care of in town you might as well forget it because most places shut down by 5:00.
Also, once they force the time change on us, it doesn't get dark until what? 10:00-10:30pm, I go to bed around 7:00pm, give me winter anytime, I hate snow and cold weather but love the fact it is dark by 5:00pm.

It can be somewhat confusing for us who live in Michigan which forces it's residents to change the clocks back and forth but work in one of the areas of Indiana which still has the brains to leave the clocks alone.

I can see how that could be confusing & annoying. The obvious answer would be for every state in the mainland US to be the same, whether they use DST or not.

Also, once they force the time change on us, it doesn't get dark until what? 10:00-10:30pm, I go to bed around 7:00pm, give me winter anytime, I hate snow and cold weather but love the fact it is dark by 5:00pm.

You can't please everybody - fact of life. I think most people would prefer lighter evenings in the summer which gives them a chance to get out & do things when they come home from work. If I hadn't been able to pop up to the model flying field for a couple of hours to relieve the stress after a hard day at work I would no doubt have suffered from a nervous breakdown long ago. I hate the dark winter evenings.

PS. This is further complicated by a huge country like the US covering different time zones.

This is true and I can see your point, unfortunately for me summer tends to be the time we are inflicted with tons of overtime which means by the time I get home, shower and eat, there is very little time for anything else. I get up at 2:00am so I can be to work by 4:00am.

Again I would have to disagree with you there. It might be different in the US as it's huge country but they tried permanent BST here back in 1969. This meant not changing the clocks back to GMT in the winter...............

......not only that Hagar but I remember in  WW11, DOUBLE summer time (2 hours in advance of GMT) was introduced and was used for the period when, normally ordinary summer time would have been in force. During the winter clocks were kept one hour in advance of GMT....in other words we had "Summer time" all the time and plus another hour in summer...........commoner  :-/
