Ethical Poll

Postby Scottler » Thu Mar 31, 2005 8:12 am

Read the story before you answer:

Two Bennington College dance students are in critical condition after falling 20 feet out of a third floor window Wednesday afternoon.

Bennington College officials say the two students were leaning against a plate glass window on the third floor of a building on campus when the window gave way and both women fell to the ground.

Bennington's College campus is right in Bennington Vermont. The students were dance students who were rehearsing a routine in the dance studio.

One of the students were taken to the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and then eventually airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The other student was taken by helicopter to Yale University Medical Center in New Haven Connecticut.

The College held a community meeting informing students of the accident. There is no word on the identities of the woman.

Personally, I think these two are lucky to have survived this long.  At what point do you think it's a good idea to lean on a window, especially one on an upper floor?

But my gut is they're going to sue, and they'll probably get a huge settlement, all because they're idiots.
Great edit, Bob.

Being a naturally careful sort of person I would never lean against a window, even if it's made of bomb-proof plastic & on the ground floor. That's just the way I was brought up, in the days not so long ago when everyone had a modicum of common-sense & was accountable for their own actions. We would never have dreamed of looking around for the nearest convenient person or organisation (preferably wealthy) to blame for our predicament. My parents would have been considerably better off if they'd sued everyone in sight for the stupid scrapes my brother & I constantly got ourselves into. Fortunately we both survived without serious or permanent injury, no doubt due to our sense of self-preservation. ::)

Okay good.  I'm glad I'm not the only one that said "MORONS!" really loud when I heard the story.

You just can't do STUPID crap and then sue someone when you get hurt.  Well, sadly, it seems you CAN.  But you shouldn't be allowed to.  lol

In the local cafe where I usually have breakfast they now have warning signs all over the place. A few months ago I spotted one on the small Christmas tree just inside the door which stated; "Do not touch this tree or it might fall over & hurt you". Now, considering that the most likely people to actually do that would be small children unable to read the notice I thought it particularly stupid. On pointing this out to the proprietor she said "Ah yes, but presumably the parents can read it. We have to put the notice up to protect ourselves."

Another such notice is fixed on the wall adjacent to a small portable gas heater. It states in big red letters; "This is a fire. Don't touch it or you could be burned." Either it's me or the world's rapidly going mad. I don't think it's me. ::)

I wonder if there would be a tomorrow if we instantly removed all the warning signs around the world.
I guess the USA would be the first country ending up in chaos. ::)

Doug, in todays world i really dont blame them. I certainly feel sorry for them for having to do that though. I feel the end is coming soon for all this rubbish though. One by one these cases are being banned and eventually someones going to go over the line and its gonna be a blanket ban for lawsuits against stupidity.

I think you are all jumping the gun saying they were stupid. If it was a floor to ceiling window, which are fairly normal in all sorts of studios from dance to art, then the windows should have been properly maintained to the point where only a bomb blast would budge them. No one says wether these people were sitting or standing when the incident happened that can make a fair difference  to the forces applied on the window. The college should have made sure that some sort of guard rail was in place to prevent pressure being applied to the windows, if they were thought to be unsafe. Then if the girls had managed to lean on the window I would be the first one to shout STUPID...... but in this case further investigation is needed. I'm fairly certain that the college will have a case to answer.

Oh I don't blame those who hang the signs.  I blame the idiots of the world who have made said sign hanging necessary.

I wonder if there would be a tomorrow if we instantly removed all the warning signs around the world.

Your probably right, but at least it would kill off all of the idiots. "Why did you stick your face on that belt sander?"..."There was no warning sign!"

...and its gonna be a blanket ban for lawsuits against stupidity.

I really hope so.

Dumb to do it on the third floor.  Even dumber to do it on the 24th floor.

It's today's mentality with so many people. EVERYTHING is someone else's fault. NOT MINE!!

Personal responsability................do you have it or don't you?

For the longest time many lawyers perpetuated this idea of "blame someone else for your own stupid actions."

That's why Congress is and has been trying to pass Tort Reform. If you read the papers you can see how much trouble it has been for years to get anything done on frivalous lawsuits.

I am sure a lawyer will contact the two girls or their families and convince them they "have a case."

You know, in my mind, where it all started was with the lady at McDonald's and the hot coffee. REMEMBER that story!!!

Soon we will need a "caution" sign on everything.:-/ What did they expect would happen when they leaned on the window?

50% of the world could be considered "stupid" and we need to educate those people, get that number down to 10%-15%, we need to raise the average........;D..........stupid ;)

Why don't we just let the stupid people kill themselves? It's effortless and cheap. *shrugs*
