Other Computer Languages.

Hi all...!

Re: My thread...

How many of you out there have had any experience, and loads of fun, in programming in other computer languages such as the various forms of BASIC (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code), Machine Code, C++, Visual BASIC, Microsoft DOS, etc...
...and how much success have you had...?

My personal experience in computer programming has involved the use of BASIC (various 8-bit computer languages), programming in ZILOG Z80 Machine code, and the Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System).

Anyone else had fun in writing software programs in languages other than Uncle Bill's compiled "Windows" language...!

I know a wee bit of Visual Basic, but I needed those skills about two years ago, and by now, my VB knowledge had to be stored a little farther back in my head in favour of other, more important things. :P

Hi Fozz.....like you I'm from "days of yore"....remember typing for hours into my speccy only to find they had made a couple of typos and the bl**dy thing wouldn't work  ;D
Spectrum Basic was my speciality..........look at this link to the old magazine Your Spectrum archive....note the date and then look down the left hand side for a letter I wrote. When in doubt DIY...... It has a bit of my "programming"....Cool or what?  ;D

I've used BASIC, COBOL, COBOL II, COBOL/370 and DOS but I can't  remember a thing about any of them except DOS!

I remember learning just plain basic way back when we had the old XT around...

Since then I've taken classes where we've learned how to work in Java, C, C+,C++, C#....Pascal, and Python...

Right now I'm in the middle of a class where we are learning Visual studio dot.net 2003... :-)

Very intuitively done compared to everything else! :-)

Another "old" hand here, started with Sinclair Basic, then did some Z80 machine code.
More to Atari STs but never really liked them, lots of DOS experience, then C, C++, Smalltalk, Pascal (yuk :P), and I'm trying to get to grips with SQL...

perhaps it's not quite fair to throw in my list of languages because I do it for a living but I also really, really, really enjoy it.

The first language I learned was Fortran.  Then I added Cobol and BAL on RCA computers (yes there was a time when RCA made mainframe machines).  After that was Princeton BASIC, Forth, assembler, Pascal and more Cobol on a TRS 80.  There was a brief period where I did a little in something called MASM on another vendor's mainframes.

When I got to UNIX I learned C and when PCs came along I picked up C++, Lisp and FoxPro.  Recently, relative to how old dirt is, I've worked in Visual Basic, VB.Net, C#, Java, Javascript and Perl.  I've looked at Python and Ruby but not done anything serious with them.

There are a few others in there that I don't remember but that's most of them.

And I have to say it's been a blast!

I cut my teeth on Commodore 16 basic and then moved on to an Amiga Basic and stopped there.  I've tried visual basic but I can't figure out where to start ???

Done a little AMX A/V control system code-writing...  pretty sure it was BASIC. Just fixing errors in strings and whatnot. Interesting, but annoying to be squatting in a freezing LAN room somewhere typing with a laptop when I should be testing the system.  ::).
