The group you are thinking of is called STOMP. I've seen them live and they are absolutely sensational.
The percussion group 'Stomp' was created in Brighton in the UK in the Summer of 1991 after ten years of collaboration between its creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas.
This reminds me of another "speciality" group called the "Flying Pickets" from the early 1980's.
(Hagar will remember them*).....!
They had a lead singer, and all the instrumental parts were "voiced" by the other members of the group.

one guy had a set of quints (the 5 tenors used in Marching) doing cartwheels. the guy was nuts.
