There was no such thing as an R rating in my day. We had U (Universal), A (Accompanied by adult) & X (Adult only). This might vary depending on the country. Think we could get into an X film at the age of 16. I can't remember the first X film I ever saw. Probably one of the old Hammer horror films. Das Boot is one of the best war films ever made. IMHO
I've watched it several times & also read the book. Not sure why it would need an R rating. I assume R stands for restricted but to be honest I don't know who it's restricted to.

I've seen it. As far as I know it's a 12 over here. Which means anyone over 12 can buy it. So nothing special there. As for the film, watch the full lengh version, not just the directors cut.  ;)

One of the best War movies ever. Like Woody says, see the whole thing not just the short version.

I don't know how old spiritflyer is but I really don't understand why this would be regarded as an adult film. I've seen plenty more objectional things in the average popular "family" films that most kids can watch without any restrictions. Das Boot was originally made for TV & shown in several episodes. The original version is long & unless you speak fluent German you would have to rely on the subtitles to understand what it's all about. I would have thought that anyone prepared to sit through all that & capable of reading the subtitles was old enough to watch it.

That and the violence and swearing is no worse than is seen in your average afternoon war film. Last time it was aired over here it was put out on the telly at 7pm. Well before the watershed. :P

I'm not going to argue against that. With the amount of mindless violence & plain junk the average child is allowed to watch from a very early age nowadays it's a pity more parents don't follow their example. IMHO

I wouldn't class Das Boot in that category. It shows things as they were & doesn't glorify war, quite the opposite.

omg, you don't even what to know how many rating systems we got here

but Das boot was pretty good. it was packaged with U-571, which i thought was better. I can't remember if Das Boot was a submarine war movie or not, clouded by U-571.

the ratings, for all of you peoples "across the pond"

G - general audience
PG - parental guidance
PG-13 - parental guidance (under 13)
R - restricted under 17 (parental supervision)
NC-17 (old X) no children under 17. (no admit)

NC-17 is not all that cracked up to be. companies throw just enough violence, sex, and language to be in R, but noin NC-17, so they can sell to the public market. and you cannot show NC17 movies in theaters, at any time.

congrats, you graduated!

Das Boot is an all time classic following the lives of a Uboat crew on an operational cruise in the North Atlantic.

U-571 is propaganda about how the Americans captured the enigma machine and codebooks even though the British got their first. What will hollywood think up next...

You gotta remember...the FCC is cracking down on anything they find "objectionable"...get ready for TV and Radio to get even more boring!

Wait...instead of relying on sex and violence to sell shows, what if we use good writing...nyahh, it'll never work!

By coincidence! And by a malfunctioning self-sinking system aboard U-110. :P
