First Flight.

Postby commoner » Wed Mar 16, 2005 2:09 pm

Hi all....Around 1947-48 as a member of The Air Training Corps (148 Squadron)..I had the pleasure of making my first flight.........30 minutes "flight experience"in the DH Rapide or Dominie as we knew it. What a wonderful, never to be forgotten experience.........I have flown many hundreds of times since, but I guess it's a bit like your first girl....you never REALLY get over the it. ::)

....I suppose you all remember that first..FLIGHT I mean....like to tell us all about it..PLEASE?.....commoner  ;)

Here's the Dominie.....

I have very sketchy memories of my first flight - I was three and strangely enough, it was in a Dragon Rapide...

Second was in a 727, ears bl**dy hurt on the decent (I was only 6 or so). Then I experienced the joys of the TU-154...

August 1957 in a RAF Miles/Handley Page M.60 Marathon navigational trainer from RAF Topcliffe in Yorkshire. (I expect it was closed down years ago.) I was 14 years old & in the ATC like Commoner. This was my first annual camp which I had been looking forward to for months. Flight lasted about 3 1/2 hours if I remember correctly. I was allowed in the right-hand seat for most of the flight. I remember we flew over the Blackpool tower but it gets a tad hazy after that. I lost all my records & logbooks many years ago so have to rely on memory now. ::)

It was one just like the photo above. Could even have been the same one. Several years later I helped break one up. None left now. :'(

The following year I had my first flight in a Chipmunk at RAF Swinderby, Lincs & fell in love with it. ;)

I was in some type of Piper or Beech when I was 4 but I don't remember it and my parents told me I slept the whole time... ::)

So after that my first flight was in a CRJ-200, then a A-319, then a A-340-600, then a A-320, then a 737, then a 777, then a A-340-600, then a 747-400. That was all in two weeks on the China trip.

Then this last October I flew in a RV-6A and a Ford Tri-Motor. This January I flew in a Cessna 177RG Cardianl.

Thats my whole flying history! ;D

My first ever plane ride was probably in a DC-9, going to visit my grandparnets in Milwaukee.

My first flight that leads to the rest of my life was in a Cessna 172SP, outta Wings airfield for a half hour ;D

You lucky guy... I love those Dragons. My first time aloft was at age 15 aboard an American Airlines DC10, NY-San Fransisco. First flight up front was in a Piper Saratoga on a short sightseeing hop at my first airshow, over ten years later. First flight where I touched the controls was on a flight school "intro" flight in a Piper Tomahawk. First solo was a C172... 9/16/95. I remember that I left the window open by mistake... :D

hmm, first rides began at the age of 3-4 weeks old...

First one I remember is in a small 4 seat piper when I was 4-5.  My friends dad and his wife were flying a similar plane in a pretty nice formation the whole way, best thing that sticks out is when the helicopter came in to land right behind us!  ::) I soon got over them ugly things... :P

First time to actually fly was back 2 years ago almost exactly.  The airplane was a Piper Cheyenne III! :-)  Got a little over 10 minutes flying small circles up and down, etc... :-) Wonderful experience! :-)

We moved a lot when I was little due to my dad being in the USAF, so I have been on countless airliners, and couldnt take a guess as to what the first one was. What I count as my real first flight was in a Cessna 172 when I was 9 or 10. It was part of the young eagles program designed to get kids interested in aviation, and it worked!

My first flight was Ronaldsway to London Luton in a Turboprop.  I was barely 17 but being tall with a reasonable smile I got away with a large brandy from the extremely attractive young lady serving the drinks.

I also remember discovering what a banking turn was, I knew the principle but I wasn't ready for the reality.  Just managed to stop myself screaming when one wing dropped.  I thought we were going to crash ::)
