Foreign Exhange Students

Postby Ben_M_K » Thu Mar 17, 2005 1:50 pm

Hey! Something I've sieriously been considering is being a foreign exchange student. I'm a very confident person and I'm not afraid to take risks. I'll probably do this in my senior year. And I'll probably do Spain. I'd be there for 10 months.

So my question is...have any of you guys ever been foriegn exchange students? I'd like to hear your experiences... :)

Did a couple of weeks in Germany when I was 13 - it was great, a half English exchange partner who was completely fluent in English along with his family! ;D

What I'm thinking of doing is for 10 months. I think then you really get a taste for the culture.

Thanks for the responses! :)

So does this involve swapping homes with someone of the same age from another country? That's how I would interpret the name Exchange Student.

We get plenty of foreign students in my home town during the summer, mainly French & German. This is arranged by a local language school that's specialised in this sort of thing for many years. We had a French girl for a couple of weeks once. I think she liked staying with us less than we liked having her. It wasn't the most rewarding experience I've ever had & I don't think what we were paid covered her food so we lost out on the deal. Strangely enough she cried her eyes out when it was time to go home as she didn't want to leave. ::)

Unfortunately the students are sometimes picked on by the local kids.  Mainly problems with them stealing their girls - as usual. Most of them are OK but they can be a tad annoying when they're in large groups. Probably quite different on their own.

Ive considered becoming an exchange student and try for Australia.  But after checking into it not only was it expensive but it would mean i would have to graduate a year late....So i dropped it right there.

As for the exchange students i have been around.  Most seem to like their experiance.  Though...no offence meant here...the 3 german exchange students i have met were and are very rude and stuck up :-/        My girlfriend is the student from Taiwan...we met because my friend across the street is her host family.

I think it would be a great experiance for anyone as long as you have the money and your school is not picky as to were your credits come from ;)

Alternatively you could do a four year degree with a year spent in another country.  For example in the UK you can do Law with European Law and spend a year in mainland Europe or a language degree with the year in the country of the language.

Food for thought.

Sounds remarkably like my German exchange. Except the parents had lived in America... ;D ;D ;D
