Not as much as you'd think. the big money comes from Sponsorship, so drivers like Schumacher and JPM are being paid a ton of money because of their success.

One of my lads used to race his motor-bike to entertain the crowds... 8)...!

For that he got aches and pains, broken bones, and cost loads of money to maintain/rebuild his bike after each race...

There was no bleedin' profit in it.. ::)....just a total loss... :'(...!

Paul....too much pain involved in racing for my liking... ;)...!

To be sucsessful, you must have sposors.

Right now GP drivers make plenty off sponsors.

In NASCAR, you get a handsome payoff just for taking a drink of your sponsors product on live television.  Or by removing another companies advertising on TV

The reason you dont see these guys being sucessful in F1isnt because teams cant afford to pay them. Its because the drivers cant afford to get their Super license to allow them to race in F1. If a driver is exceptional then a team will give the guy a car for a few months so he can build up the miles nessicary for the license. If not you have to pay for the car and team time. Kind of like a pilots career really, if your lucky you get sponsored to get your license to fly, and so on.

The two I mentioned both have F1 superlicenses. In Davidson's case he is kept out by Sato (Honda, although now Honda are on the way to owning BAR so this will be irrelevant) and Wilson because he didn't have the sponsorship to take to a team...
