Why doesn't somebody intervene. :-/
I submitted my objection, I have too many childhood memories watching the planes flying around North Weald to let this one slide

I'm certain I'm not the only who feels like the government could do something to save these airfields, they are a major part of our country's history.

Let's hope enough people object.

i mean, some of us are in other countries (i'll use US as an example).

we arent in the same city, state, country, not even continent. does our opinion really count? just a question, cause if it does, i'm all for it.

The more that object the better.
At the end of the day, it's killing some of the best airfields in the UK, and lord knows, could (and probably does) happen elsewhere.

I lived round the corner from this place for 20 years, that's my whole life, which is why I feel so strongly about it.
Would you, as an aviation enthusiast, want to see your local airfield destroyed?

I wish they'd plow over the local airport.  Perhaps then they could put a GOOD airport in its place!  

North Weald has been under threat for many years. My view is that if the local council & the government have made up their minds there's not a lot anyone can do about it. The problem is that the land is worth a vast amount of money if put to other use. Pete Seeger's "Little Boxes" springs to mind.* Don't get me started on what government policy is doing to our country. The whole place will soon be covered with concrete if they have their way. If I said what I think I would be banned from this forum.

Welcome to the Brave New World.

I took 15 minutes of so to comprehend the instructions then file an objection. What I really detest about this is how difficult making the objection is.

However, at least there is a well formed action group for North Weald, and if it is to be saved, this will be the way. The MP for Guildford agreed on that when I asked him about the plans for Wisley...

All I can say is that I hope we don't have another Hatfield/West Malling/Gravesend/Hornchurch on our hands. These airfields are some of the only physical reminders we have of WW2, and the sooner they go, the sooner certain elements of soceity will have an excuse to forget...

PS. If any of our British users read this and haven't filled in the objection, please do. It should only take a maximum of 15 minutes, and hopefully with the extra audience this campaign will get from the internet, North Weald will be saved. Even I dragged myself away from here for that long...

Maybe my cynicism is showing but I don't think they will take any notice of anyone living outside the local area. In my experience they will take very little notice of any petitions, even from people directly affected by the plans. I'll willingly put my name to anything that I think will do the slightest good.

To be honest I'm more worried about my local airport right now. I can't go into detail but I've discovered something in the last few days that doesn't fill me with confidence about its future. I hope I'm wrong but I fear that beautiful spot that I (& many others) have enjoyed for most of my life will soon be just another blot on the landscape. And so it goes on.

man, if they tried to close O'Hare, i surely wouldn't be the only one complaining. ok, ok, my local airports, palwaukee & Schaumburg. i've got strong ties there. ties strong enough at one of them that they're holding my uncle's aircraft down.

Wasnt it the FS community that helped save Miegs Field in Chicago?

Could we do any less here as well?

For what it is worth I filed my objection even though I live in the US. I firmly believe we need to keep these reminders of our history around and viable so we dont forget our past.

Why you ask? Because those who dont remember history are doomed to repeat it and I for one do not want another conflict like that one.

When I talk to WW2 veterans I give them my heart felt thanks for their efforts, actions, and sacrifice during that conflict. If it wasnt for all of them,  Brits, Poles, Free French, Americans, Russians, Dutch, Canadians, Austrailians, Chinese, Indians, and all of the other allied countries that had troops involved, you and I would not be enjoying the lifestyle we so take for granted today. My heartfelt thanks go to all WW2 allied veterans.

Please help and take up the fight to help save this piece of history. Pilots from all allied countries flew from this field to defend our freedom and it's the least we can do to help save it.


Sorry but when it comes to things like this I get very passionate and I apologize if I didnt list your country but if i did this replay would take up two pages.

and did you forget, we didn't win in the end. i remember how many protests there were in front of Daley Plaza, heck, i was in one of them. but in the end, and i knew from the start, Daley would backstab chicago. he's just like his father.

That animation makes my stomach turn... very sad. Reminds me that I heard recently that in the US, airports are vanishing at the rate of one a day... seems there may be new ones popping up, but they're mostly private. Between the greedy developers, their bought&paid -for politicians, the insurance companies, the media, and the lawyers, the glory of American General Aviation is being whittled down to nothing.   Other than my AOPA membership, I haven't done much myself to stop it, but when I start flying again, I plan to get more involved at whatever field I'm based at, at least. They're almost all under siege right now.

We may have lost that battle but if you remember we won the war.

The FAA now has to be notified before any field is removed or the developer will face hefty fines. As far as Miegs Field is concerned the FAA is still investigating and has found so far that the city violated federal regulation by the way they closed the airport. They may fine the city of Chicago for removing the field. The downside is they wont force the city to restore that lost treasure.

Property developers tend not to take much notice of the rules. If they can't get what they want legally they simply go ahead & do it anyway. Once you knock down a listed building you can hardly put it up again. It's gone for ever. The same goes for protected trees or anything else you can think of. You can read about these things happening almost every week in the newspapers. As for airports, Mayor Daley seems to have found a very effective way over that little problem. Even if the FAA eventually gets round to fining him he got what he wanted. The fine will be a small price to pay compared with the value of the land. I'm afraid there's no room for sentiment where big money & profit is involved.
