Hi Paul. No security measure can be 100% effective. That would be impossible. I get far less annoying spam than I used to since my ISP introduced spam blocking. In fact, I get very little mail at all. ::) Until recently I used to regularly receive anything up to 100 innocent e-mails every day, mostly from people asking for help. I did my best to answer every one the same day. One drawback to all this filtering is that I'm sure it blocks perfectly innocent mail along with it. Damn those spammers & hackers. >:(

Hi Paul. The weather's not so nice here at the moment. At least it's not raining. Check out the Shoreham Airport webcam. http://www.shorehamairport.co.uk/webcam.asp

Most of these problems seem to be with Outlook Express. I believe you can set up Firefox as your mail server so you don't need to use OE at all. I've never tried it but it might be worth looking into.

Another problem I've experienced recently. My ISP intemittently blocks mail from my sister-in-law's ISP so I can no longer receive her messages with any certainty. I can mail her & she has no problems receiving it. She has the same trouble mailing some of her friends in the US which is very inconvenient. Makes me wonder how many other e-mails I'm missing. People must think that I'm either very rude or I've died. I'm not ready to go yet. :o ;)

It's always the same. You find something worthwhile & then someone comes along & messes it all up. I could give you plenty of similar examples. >:(

Check with her Doug... ;)...

You never know...

She may be concerned about your well-being and may have recommended a glass of Austrailian Cabernet Viagra red wine to accompany your evening meal... ::)...!
...that would put an instant stop to your incoming mail.. :o...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers Doug... ;D...!

Get it now?  ;D

Yes, I know spam can be a problem. That's why I have a webbased e-mail that I use when subscribing to a forum or newsletter and a "real" e-mailadress from my DSL-provider for the important stuff. Seems to help!   :)

Cheers!

I do the same thing LemonCat does...

Most of my spam comes to my Netscape account.  None comes to my Hotmail or Charter accounts (the latter being the one from my ISP).

To borrow from the movie Inherit the Wind:

Progress has never been a bargain...you have to pay for it.

Umm...I'm running SBC Yahoo DSL package here, I have the mail set to go right to my outlook inbox as this seems to work well for me...I also have my school account sending mail directly to my SBC yahoo account so that I don't miss any important messages from the school.  And typically when I sign up for anything I use my msn Hotmail account to do so... ;-)

The web-based sbc yahoo goes through and filters the junk mail from the good.  and if any spam get's by it there, outlook 2003 will typically filter it out...(Only had this happen once since this is all the spam that made it to the outlook inbox). Once a week or so I'll login to the web-based server for sbc yahoo and make sure I don't have a lot of spam, typically I'll find 2-3 that are just weekly mailing lists from the school....so basically no junk mail..

The MSN hotmail though is another story, since it is what I use to sign up for things and when ordering things off of the internet, there is invariably a large amount of junk that goes there...it gets checked every few weeks... :-)

see i find only allowing certain emails to get through a much better solution.

cause my Gmail, Yahoo, Drumlineramos, Germainphoto, and Hotmails accounts all have spam filters, and outlook has a spam filter. but none works better than allowing addresses you allow into your inbox.

yes there is a downside if your a business  &/or Customer service. solution (it works for me so far) is to have your cutomer (or other) type a certain word in the subject.

The key (for me at least) to avoiding spam is to be really careful about what I sign up to.  If I download stuff, I make sure I uncheck that annoying little box that always says "Send me offers from (company's name here) or our affiliates" also, I try not to sign up for everythin I see on the web.

A nice feature about Yahoo mail (what I use) is that there is a thing called 'AdressGuard'  basically you make up a fake 'base' adress (ie: bob@yahoo.com) and then put another word after it (ie: simviation) so it looks like: bob-simviation@yahoo.com... Its nice because you can have like 200 of these at once, and when one gets  filled up with spam, delete it and make another... :D

The answer is to learn to recognise junk mail & viruses. I reckon to be able to sniff them out at 1,000 paces & delete them without reading them. I'm rarely wrong but it's possible I've deleted some genuine mail by mistake. I would still prefer to do this myself rather than let a machine do it for me. This causes its own problems & probably blocks far more genuine mail than I ever did.
