How does it cost?

Postby Loafing Smurf » Sat Jan 08, 2005 2:11 pm

Together a bat and ball cost $1.10.

The bat cost a dollar more than the ball.

How much does the ball cost?

The obvious answer is $0.10, but since I expect a trick question, $0.05.

I thought the answer was $0.10, but before I looked I said to myself it wouldn't be because it is too simple. I couldn't think of anything else though - how did you come up with $0.05? ::)

It price of the ball can't be $0.10 because together the two items cost $1.10 and the bat costs 1 dollar more than the ball-if the ball was $0.10 then the bat would be $1.10 by itself-so the total would be $1.20.

If the ball only costs $0.05, the bat (which costs $1.00 more) would then cost $1.05.  So, $1.05 + $0.05 = $1.10.

 I get it, at first I thought there was a 5% tax on the dollar.

There are two unknowns, so I'll use two equations.

1) bat + ball = $1.10
2) bat = $1.00 + ball

now substitute equation one into equation two

($1.00 + ball) + ball = $1.10

$1.00 + ball + ball = $1.10 (brackets removed)

$1.00 + 2ball = $1.10 (simplified)

2ball = $1.10 - $1.00 (simplified)

2ball = $0.10 (simplified)

ball = $0.05 (simplified)

All these complicated equations confuse me. ??? Surely it's a case of simple mathematics & reading the question properly.
The bat cost a dollar more than the ball.

Note that it doesn't say the bat is 10 times more than the ball. It's one dollar more than the ball. I'll go along with Richie on this one. The bat at $1.05 is exactly 1 dollar more than the ball at $0.05. $1.05 + $0.05 = $1.10. ;)
