Yup, I heard about this on the radio earlier. Hope they're OK. A Navy Lynx often visits Shoreham & it's quite likely I've met these chaps.

I  think this is the latest news. The BBC is usually pretty up-to-date.

This explains the huge amount of Helicopter activity we had a couple of days ago.

It's so sad - I just spotted it on the news.
There poor families.

I thought something was up when there was a Helicopter circling over head for most of the day on monday or tuesday.

But I like the way the rescue effort was being directed from Scotland. Real nice move by the MOD there.

Just how it works, much like the new centralised emergency centres the country is getting, its all on their computer screen so it shouldnt matter where its based, shouldnt being the key word
I still want to know why a lynx was out on a search and rescue, i might have missed it, but was the weather perfect? because if it wasnt then the lynx wouldnt have been equipped for S&R Lets hope this is an isolated incident and my condolences go out to the familys of those lost in this accident

That's how its done nowadays, and porobably has no negative effect on the conduction of SAR Ops. As Craig said the system is computerised, and is logically colocated at Kinloss with the Nimrod MR fleet, which will be involved in 99.9% of SARops around the UK.

As for the Lynx being on SARops, in an emergency any military aircraft can be called to assist in a SAR situation, and an airborn helicopter in the vicinity may be a life saver given that a dedicated SAR heli would have to be scrambled, which could take up to an hour depending on the time of day/night...

It seems that there were two military warships in the area at the time. The Lynx was probably from one of those and was the closest to the scene. Sadly they now think it was a false alarm, but only because no one was missing from the warships, someone could have gone in off a fishing boat or a yacht and we might not know for a while.

(I know they say that the Lynx was stationed at Culdrose in the first artical, but I've never see one flying about. It's always Sea Kings, Merlins and only very occasionally, Chinooks.)

Apparently the Lynx was operating from HMS Portland (a type 23), and is shore based at Yeovilton when not at see. The crew names have now been released: a pilot, 2 observers and a winchman/engineer.
