Scary, but this actually shows how little we know about our race and planet.

The bible had us believing for centuries that god put everything upon the earth and that we humans were unique as a race. This meant anything that opposed that view was simply "overlooked". I'm sure that as time goes on we'll find more spiecies of human.

Also, wern't there supposed to be tribes of pigmys out on some pacific islands? Or did I just dream that?

Not really. It's simply a fact that evolution was ignored because the bible said that god put everything on this planet as it appears today and few were willing to believe that the first book of genisis might just be a piece of fiction.

Sure and I totally agree, but this could trigger off another mud fight. And I'll certainly get involved sooner or later - not good (for me).  ;)

True, but probably not the case here.  In this instance there were some bones found deep in a cave somewhere.  These bones could probably be easily confused for ape bones or something more common.  The discovery of these bones as homo-whatever remains was probably a result of having the right knowledgable person in the right place at the right time.  I don't think this is a case of having a well known set of knowledge (bones) that was merely misinterpreted due to preconceived dogma.

We're continually finding all sorts of new data on stuff.  Just saw a show on TV the other night about giant squid.  People have thought for a LONG time that humans had never seen a live giant squid before.  Turns out we've been catching baby giant squid for some time but they're so similar to regular squid babies that we didn't know what they were.  It took a giant squid expert to tell the difference between the giant squid babies and normal regular squid babies.  Did a pre-conceived notion prevent us from understanding that a big animal can grow out of a very small one?  No, it was simply a matter of having the right person in the right place at the right time.
