It's nothing to do with me but I think this topic is a tad dangerous. As an ignorant Brit I never understood the US presidential voting system or why anyone has to concede anything. ::)

However, that's beside the point. I would rather not discuss politics here or know the political leanings of members of this forum.

Thanks. ;)

I don't get why he gave up. He was two electoral votes behind Bush and then he just quits. It makes no sense at all. ??? :P

Woodlouse, the US voting system is very complicated, the electoral college results have never made any sense to me, but once bush got Ohio(Kerry conceded when his advisors told him there wernt enough votes left to count to give him the amount he needed to take the state) his total electoral vote went above the required 270 to claim residency in the white house. I wont make any comments on the results as this isnt the place,

If he figured he was going to lose, then he did what was best for the country.  He may not agree with his opponent, but we are in a state of war and the country needs to stand united.  To contest this election would cause fracture that unity and give the bad guys what they wanted.

Conceding is done when the outcome is clear, the point being to not drag out something that is a foregone conclusion.

In this case Bush was poised to take Ohio and the election. Bush had a sufficient lead in Ohio that the uncounted provisional ballots could not alter the outcome. Ohio has a law requiring an 11 day delay before those provisional ballots are counted, so Kerry short circuited that wait by admitting that even if all provisional ballots were in his favour it would make no difference.
