Yet another case of stupidity...

Postby Wing Nut » Wed Oct 20, 2004 12:32 pm

Deputy, no offense to you, but there are some dumba$$ cops out there.  I wouldn't be upset it this were the first time I had heard of something like this, but it is almost becoming commonplace.  You want to tell me how an old lady with 6 broken ribs is a threat to a cop?  >:(

I actually just called the Police Department in question and spoke with their public affairs officer who gave me the following reasoning:

1:  The officer in question was a 5'4" female.

2:  A Taser is a measurable use of force as opposed to using a club or something and the amount of force used can decide whether or not the officer acted apropriately.

3:  Each officer issued a Taser goes through intensive training in its use and get's Tasered his/herself so that they know first hand the effects.

4:  Using a Taser may have actually saved the woman injuries as opposed to being (if she chose to fight hard) grabbed and possibly rolling around on the floor, and being poked by such things as badge points, things around her, and other injuries.

Out of all of the above, I actually believe the last one the most, but I'm still not totally convinced it was necessary.  The PAO I spoke to said her reaction was the same as mine; namely "Why the hell would they do that?"

It does seem a little over the top at first sight but there might well be some things they haven't reported. It's quite possible the old lady in question is a sandwich short of a picnic & even frail-looking old ladies can get violent.

Look at it this way. In the old days before these "Taser" gizmos they would probably have shot her. ::)

Having only been assaulted 3 times in my life .... two of them by Old "Ladies"... I can understand how violent they can get. I hasten to add they were both unprovoked attacks.

So without all the facts we cant really comment ....... and as Hagar's post said ..... better than being shot.

cheers

I've worked in a Dementia Ward of a nursing home...believe me, I know how violent old ladies can get (the population is ovewhelmingly female in such places).

Your first reaction may be shock (no pun intended) at the officer's actions but what else could she have done?

Another Graphic reality can be shown in the book Elder Rage.
