Fincke and his Russian partner, Gennady Padalka, are set leave the International Space Station (news - web sites) and return to Earth on Saturday aboard a Soyuz space capsule.
Fincke's daughter, Tarali Paulina, was born in June. The astronaut was linked by satellite to his wife's cell phone during the delivery at a Houston-area hospital.
"She knows how to turn over now. She's getting really big without me," Fincke told reporters in an Earth-to-orbit press conference.
Fincke and Padalka will be leaving the station with Russian Yuri Shargin, who traveled to space with their replacement crew last week. American Leroy Chiao and Russian Salizhan Sharipov are scheduled to spend six months aboard the orbiting science lab.
