Passenger attacks pilots with axe
A plane at Bodoe airport, Norway, after an attack on board
The man was arrested on landing
A man has been arrested after attacking two pilots and a passenger with an axe on an internal flight in Norway.

The pilots managed to bring the plane in to land safely, and were then taken to hospital with the injured passenger.

A police spokesman told the BBC the assailant, described as of north African origin, used an emergency axe kept on board.

The plane was on a 20-minute flight between the northern towns of Narvik and Bodoe when the attack took place.

The plane was a 20-seater Dornier 228 operated by the small regional airline Kato Air, with seven passengers on board.

About to land

The plane is said to have no barrier dividing pilots and passengers.

The man attacked just before 1100 (0900 GMT) "as the plane was about to land at Bodoe - it had begun landing procedures", Bjarte Walla, a police prosecutor based at Bodoe, told BBC News Online.

He said the pilots were both hurt, though their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

"We don't really know anything about a motive," he said. "It is too early to speculate."

He said the incident was dealt with quickly and there was no impact on other flights in and out of Bodoe airport.

It's shocking isn't it?

Great, now that's another thing people will want simulated in FS2006.  Axe weilding nut jobs.  I just hope they have an option under realism to turn it off.

There seems to be some confusion as to where this maniac got the axe from. I don't know the regulations since 9/11 but in my day all passenger aircraft had to carry emergency fire axes. These were usually attached in a convenient position near the main exit doors. The standard aircraft fire axe is shaped rather like the ice pick used by mountaineers & would make a very effective & terrifying weapon. (Ozzy will confirm this. :o)

I searched for a photo but drew a blank. I might pop round the old company tomorrow & see if they have one in stock that I can take a photo of.

OK, I'll see what I can do. It's possible they're no longer available. They used to have an old one in the packing department for opening & breaking up wooden crates. I got this stopped as it was far too dangerous & someone could have been seriously hurt.

You obviously missed my point about fire axes. Until quite recently these were required by law to be located in a visible & easily accessible position on all licenced passenger carrying aircraft, usually near the main exit doors. There's not much use in carrying a fire axe on board an aircraft if nobody can find it or use it in the case of an emergency. This shows how thinking has changed in the last couple of years. I'll try to find out the latest regulations regarding them.

But wern't such things banned asfter 9/11. Talk about providing weapons for the terrorists! Why bother trying to get them thru the aiport security when they are provided free of charge on a plane!!!! ::)

Ben

This is what I intend to find out. The company I worked for kept them in stock & sold them on a regular basis for as long as I can remember. If the axe was missing the aircraft was not allowed to take off. Simple as that. As I mentioned earlier, it's possible they're no longer available.

PS. This is the CAA regulation I remember.
