Pilot Jobs

Postby Ace_777 » Fri Sep 24, 2004 1:36 pm

Why is nobody hiring pilots anymore ( in the u.k anyway) I mean no airlines have vacancies. Im worried by this lack of nobody hiring as I would like to be a airline pilot. Or is this question just stupid and everyone is just staffed up at the mo ? ;D And when airlines do have vacancies how many people normally reply ?

according to your profile your 14, i can assure you for the next 9 years the job situation in the airline world wont be of any concern to you. It will change so many times and its just impossible to predict how the pilot jobs situation will be then.
As to why airlines arnt hiring, downturn in business and cost cutting measures, things are slowly getting better though.
As to how many people apply, sometimes 100's sometimes 1000's. Even more if your applying for sponsorship.

Very few airlines are hiring at this point.  The entire industry is still plagued with memories of 9/11.  Most of the majors here in the US have filed for bankruptcy protection.

That said, in a few years there is going to be a MAJOR hiring boom....they're laying everyone off, which means when the slump is over, they're not going to have anyone.  I'm suspecting about 3-5 more years and they're REALLY gonna need folks...
Great edit, Bob.

and no doubt they will save a huge amount because most pilots laid off wont be able to afford to keep their licenses current, so they can just hire the new guys in at new guy pay.

right now, the heavyweights in the US are faltering pretty bad, that goes for Delta, US Air and American.
It's clear one of them has to go, and it looks like US Air will be the unlucky one.

The job market will be improved, especially on the feeder routes (fancy a CRJ?), but the situation will look pretty much the same for guys applying for larger jet jobs, like 767, 777 etc.

This is from my career councellor in the US. :)

Some of the smaller airlines are recruiting - I think it was FlyBE who had an advert in one of the major mags in the last week or so for their sponsorship scheme.
