I'd feel safer trusting in a parachute to save me than a rubber band, not too mention falling out of a plane would be instantanious death, where as a drop for a still object might mame the hell out of you, and you are sure to feel it for a long time!

Sounds awesome, I have always wanted to do that!! Never had the nerve yet.

Heck we've known that all along!!!! ;D

if your parachute doesnt work, you have time to think about stuff before you die....if the rubber band breaks, well...thats different.

Not true. There have been several people who have survived after falling from great altitudes.

I'm willing to bet those people wished they had only fallen 9,000 feet ;)

I dunno....If I fall from 9K and live or if I fall from 14K and live....is one really better than the other?  lol

It makes no difference, after about 1000ft, you reach a point where you have reached maximum speed probably about 150miles an hour or something depending on yr weight and you can go no faster. I forget my physics for the proper term. (Doh!)
So 20 000 ft, or 1000ft does not really have much in it.  ::)

Terminal velocity?

Ay, thats the term! Thanks Jaffa!
I did get an A in physics... but that doesn't say much for forgetting that! :o

...depending on yr weight and you can go no faster...

Your weight isn't really going to change anything.
It's only affect would be to make you a larger object;
thus creating more air resistance, and slowing you down.
But the drag created by that extra helping of holiday ham would probably be negligible.

Remember, all objects in free fall will accelerate at 9.81m/s2 on earth.
Drag is the only force that can govern the objects terminal velocity.

Yeah, its the size of earth that determines our acceleration. The earth won't change in size, we won't change in acceleration. Thats why if you drop two objects, the same size and air resistance, they'll both accelerate at the same rate (if we ignore any air resistance difference on either).
