This brings into question the whole art business which I've often thought is a scam anyway. The art "experts" set the value on works of art & what they say goes. These people live in a little world of their own. I have often wondered how any painting, however brilliant or rare, could be worth this amount of money.

One Norwegian art expert estimated "The Scream" stolen on Sunday would fetch $60-$75 million if legally sold at auction and "Madonna" $14.92 million.

"The Scream" was never one of my favourite paintings. I don't even care for the style.

I figure if I can do it, it's not art. That painting for example with the two blue bars and the red stripe down the centre. I can do that so it's not art.

The strangest art exhibit I ever saw was at the Hamilton Art Gallery. It was a flourecent light sticking vertically out of a paint bucket. They were painting the gallery at the time so I thought the painters were using it as a light. I read the plaque next to it and it was actually an exhibit. It's strange what passes for art these days.

Whats the point of the risk of being caught / shot in the raid, just to have an un-sellable painting?

The fact that it provokes a reaction must mean something. It conveys a sense of horror to me which would seem to be the artist's intention. In that case he succeeded.

I know very little about art but I can appreciate a nice picture or piece of sculpture. I do know that most artists don't benefit or make much profit from their work while they are alive. What annoys me is that some self-styled art "expert" can decide long after they have died that their work is worth sometimes millions of dollars. They are the ones who profit from it. This is what I find obscene about the whole business.

What about FS stuff?  There are litterally millions of people around the world who pay close to 100 US dollars for an aircraft represented in (for all intents and purposes) a video game.

Doesn't that, from an outside perspective, count as a little off?

And its their money, so if they want to waste it on oil and canvas, more power to 'em.

It isn't exactly unsellable.  True, anyone with any art knowledge would know exactly what that was, but private collectors (those crazy people with rooms devoted to weird shtuff) will pay out the wazoo for the real deal.

And if they want to make some money off it, they could make a fake (there are people who specialize in this) and then return it to the art gallery, anonymously of course.  They then sell the original on the black market and make millions.  Of course, how do you prove the original is the original on the black market?

It's strange what passes for art these days.  

Remember last year there was a big art exhibit going through the US and the main draw was a pile of elephant crap? (think we talked about it here?)

After seeing people get all worked up over this elephant "masterpiece" I went out and chased dogs around for a week, but to no avail seems people already buy to much sh*t.  ;D
