Ramp Rat killed at O'Hare...

Postby Wing Nut » Fri Jul 30, 2004 7:15 pm

I don't have all the details, but one of the guys for one of the American economy airlines was driving a tow tug behind a 737 when it powered up.  The driver was blown off of the tug then the tug was BLOWN over on top of him.  From what my source said (another ramp rat), the guy's skull was crushed and he died instantly.

I not much on rules and regulations at major airports, but if I'm not mistaken are they not suppose to make sure it is clear before firing the engines? Seems this was easily preventable.
Sad situation indeed :'(

No doutb there's a mathematical equation for "Horridness of death" somewhere, but both seem to be equally rotten draws to me!

Very sad indeed  :(

Having been a rampie, I can explain this.  Yes.  The pilot is supposed to look in the rearview mirror before....oh wait, there aren't any.

Therefore, it's the job of the other rampies to give an all clear signal to the pilot prior to the start of each engine.  Interesting to see who didn't do their job in this case.

:(
Great edit, Bob.

Not realy. Tugs weigh upwards of 25 tons, so his death would have been instantaneous. I would much rather die that way than a slow death like being burned alive or being drowned.

I got another story from one of the ticketing agents that two carts collided and then it rolled over on the guy.  I tend to believe this story more, as it would take a WHOLE lot of thrust to tip a tug over.  EIther way, the poor fella ended up being crushed under a tug...
