[quote]Roving black bear shot near Hamilton

Saturday, July 03, 2004
A black bear seen wandering in the Dundas area near Hamilton has been shot and killed.
Animal control officers found the bear in a bush and were waiting for provincial officials when they decided to shoot.
Several residents in the Dundas and Flamborough areas had reported seeing the bear over the past couple of days.
Parents were told to not let children play near bush areas and to be vigilant when walking in the woods.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says bear sightings this far south at this time of year are unusual.

Hi, Iroquois,
We still have a precious few black bears in the swamps of south Alabama and still more in the Florida panhandle. Misdirected hunters occasionally shoot them and are severly punished, but I've never heard of an official deliberately shooting one

.
Cheers,
Doug

Black Bears are incredible rare in Southern Ontario. They tend to reside to the central and northern regions of the province. This poor bear was shot because he happened to wonder into the city. No he wasn't waring a hat and tie with no pants. ;D

Here in the Smoky Mountains Black Bear are the more commom animal seen. Sad thing is the Wildlife Agency will shoot and kill bear that wander into town to get food. Gatlinburg built right in the middle of the National park has bear problems often, the bear get hungry because of lack of food in the mountains and come to eat out of trash cans.
So what do they do? Shoot them.
First off we are invading their territory, Black Bear aren't aggressive but you always get the stupid tourist that has to get a closer look at the cute little baby! Without using the common sense that if there is a baby bear mom isn't far behind, hence the reason for a bear attack. The tourist is also the reason for lack of food in the mountains, traffic, pollution etc, is destroying the natural habitat creating the lack of food for the bear.
I have incountered many bear in my trips in the mountains and never once felt threatened by them, they won't attack unless you give them reason too, they are actually more scared of you than you of them, let them do their thing and it is quite a joy watching them. And no matter how bad you want that "Cute baby bear" photo don't ever go up to a baby!!!! They will want to play with you but mommy is in the woods watching the young and she is really picky as to who her child plays with!!!
Respect the creatures of the woods and they will respect you!

If you read the article more closely, it's obvious that the local officials didn't know what to do. They didn't know if this bear was harmful or not because they rarely encounter them. They couldn't wait for the people from MNR to come either. You know the civil service, they move like molasass through a coffee filter.
If you look at a map of Ontario, find North Bay. Draw a line pointing towards Quebec at a 45 degree angle. Above that line bears are common but below it bears are rare. They like the thick forests of the Canadian Shield. They have been known to hang around Algonquin Provincial Park which is a little south of that line but there aren't enough forests for them south of that.
