well, now that marky is tellin us about his fab book, sight for a merlin or something (im already beggin my dad to buy it for me ) i will tell u about the one book i bought 2 days ago.... for the economic sum of $8CDN is called "The Hardest Day, The Battle of Britain, 18 August 1940" by Alfred Price...inside it says is

You might like to try "First Light" by Geoffrey Wellum. Not specifically about the BoB but one of the best books on this period I've ever read - written by someone who was there & took part in it. I highly recommend it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141008148/202-8049846-9218207

How would you rate Fighter,  The True Story of the Battle of Britain by Len Deighton?  I picked it up locally for US$7.97, but haven't read it yet.

Hi Doug. I read "Fighter" many years ago & it's time I read it again. Len Deighton is a good author & debunks many of the myths about the BoB. It's not popular in some quarters for this reason but I think his account is one of the more accurate examples. You have to remember that it was written many years after the end of WWII & he had access to records not available to authors of other accounts or the ordinary people there at the time.

He also wrote "Bomber", a similar account of RAF Bomber Command during WWII. Both well worth a read. IMHO

You have to remember when reading Bomber that it is a fictional story. And I must say that it's one of the dullest books i've ever read. Infact, I never finished it. It's still on my shelf even though it should have been returned to the library nearly two years ago...

Thanks for reminding me Woody. It's obviously a long time since I read Bomber but I don't remember finding it boring or difficult to read.

However, as the title suggests his "Fighter: The True Story of the Battle of Britain" is a serious piece of historical research - from his point of view. In order to unearth the facts on a particular subject I try to read everything available on it from as many viewpoints as possible & make up my own mind.
