Isn't Canada Day a celebration directed towards the confederation of
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada; and not our independence?

Come to think of it, Canada never gained independence from the British Empire.

Well, with that aside... Happy Canada Day!

Actually it's both. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Upper, and Lower Canada declared independence from Britain and signed a confederation joining them into one nation. We gained independence but unlike the US, we also became a commonwealth. England had passed our original constitution into their law which is why the Crown had so much power over us. That was until the early 1980s when we passed our own constitution severing us completely from the Crown.
