Is there any rational explanation? Why would we want to leave terra furma?

Oh, man, I just love the feeling of takeoff... Soaring up right next to a big cumulus cloud... And the turbulence... Turbulence is fun.

because driving takes longer and aint much fun at .5 mph crawling along the M8  ;D

You think the M8 is bad, try the M25 on a Monday morning, its the biggest parking-lot in the EU

...'cos we look up at all the dicky birds having fun in the sky...
...and wonder why we are stuck down here... ...!

With me, I was born with it in my blood. I've been fascinated with aviation all my life, even before I can remember.

I read an article on the 'Passion for Flying' recently. I thought it was quite interesting. It even had a small 6 questionaire. The results? Seems i'm completely obsessed with flying

I think that is a very good question gaztop.

After many many years of doing it...I still don't have the answer.

Perhaps you may want to look up Pilot Officer JG MAGEE JR. ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE and read his poem High Flight.

High Flight

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds-and done an hundred things
You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.  Hovering there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace
