WWII Bomb Found

A very strange surprise for a fisherman off the coast of Newfoundland. In his net, he actually pulled up an undetonated bomb from WWII. The bomb had been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for 60 years but surprisingly, the explosives were still in good condition. It was taken away to be safely detonated.
This was on the 6:00pm news but I couldn't find any online articles about it.

WOW!

Now if I could catch stuff like that, I would get back into fishing.

I wonder what other things are hiding in the ocean ;D What kind of bomb was it? When we lived in Hawaii, my dad was out in some open isolated area near were we lived (Eva Beach, right next to Honolulu Intl [PHNL]) and he found a whole bunch of WWII machine gun rounds :)

Interesting. I wonder how many more are out there? Must be hundreds if not thousands. Scary. :-/

There's loads of junk in the sea including complete aircraft. At the end of WWII they often dumped perfectly good naval aircraft over the side of carriers before returning to port. They're always digging up all sorts of stuff around these parts. They discovered an unexploded German bomb somewhere on Shoreham Airport when they built the new hard runway back in the 1970s. The empty casing is now standing inside the door of the Archive & Visitor Centre for visitors to drop their contributions into.
http://www.thearchiveshoreham.co.uk/showroom2-b.htmThey also found a pipe bomb loaded with explosives surrounding the whole airfield. This had been installed in the early part of WWII when invasion looked certain. It was to be used as a last resort in case of attack, putting the airport out of commission so it was of no use to the enemy. It was still live & had simply been forgotten. Making it all safe delayed the new runway for some time. I probably taxied right over this lot almost every day for some 2 years.
Did you see my latest topic in the History forum? They just found a Hurricane that crashed in the middle of London in 1940.

Or just detonate it and the fish will come to you

My underlying thought fret,
but that would be cheating now wouldn't it?

At the end of WW1 the powers that be dumped a huge amount of ordnance into the English Channel. Apparently there are enough poison gas shells lying out there to kill the population of Britain twice over.

Schiphol tended to be infested with UXBs, until they really cleaned up the place when the new terminal was built

With the amount of ordnance that was let off in WWI and WWII these things are going to continue to be dragged up for many years to come.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were a few landmines still scattered around our local beach. Nobody's been blown up yet - to my knowledge.

I think the shores of Europe were pretty carefully cleaned up at the end of the war.
But 60 years on and Egypt is still the worst country in the world for land mines still kicking around. After all the battles in western Africa no one stayed behind after the advance to clear up.
