Does anyone ever actually buy anything they've seen in a pop-up?  Is it really profitable for the people who create them?  I usually don't even look at them before clicking them out of the way.  Maybe there are some good deals that come up, but with all the scams and viruses etc. I get real leery.

Nope, never. I wouldn't out of principle as well. I think I'd fear I'd be getting conned if I did.
Infact I go a step further by having all the popup blockers, firewalls etc that I need. They don't bother me!

Pop-ups, ignore 'em

I have a very effective pop stopper. But the people that want you to see these ads will stop at nothing to get them through. Now they employ pop unders that all pop up stoppers that I'm aware of will not detect. These will pop under inside the site being viewed. They are extremely annoying. Some are so large that they block 90% of the site view. To top it all off many make you hunt for the close feature....forcing you to view it.  >:(

Just for the piss off factor alone, I refuse to EVER purchase ANYTHING they advertise.  >:(

Don't forget that ads pay for you favorite flight sim sites. The only other option for sites is to sell goods as well. That's why Avsim doesn't have any ads. Online shops don't bother people and they pull in loads of money if (a big IF) people want to buy the products. It's really hit and miss. Ads are a more secure route for funding.

I have Popup Stopper which works really well. Tried Morzilla but I didn't really like it.

I ran the Google Toolbar to kill my pop ups until they started getting past it.  That's when I switched to Moz and haven't seen one since.

Please also remember that I make specific efforts to have non invasive pop-unders & yes - they are the only financial support this site has.

Without them the site would die in a month & I can only thank the more insightful who do actually understand the need for - & support - our sponsors.  8)

Hey Pete I am willing to let my stopper allow SimV ads but how would it work?

Click the advertisement and then be able to close it or just closing them works?

Ironically enough I have the dreaded aol, and don't get a single pop-up that I don't want...

Some sites that open new windows get blocked, but i can tell it to allow them and always get to see them as well.

The pop-up blocker may as well be the only convenience of AOL that I would miss if we were to switch to any other service as it has always worked surprisingly well for me...

As for purchasing things because of an ad...

does anybody remember those 3d glasses ads? the one's that appear at the top of this site?

I bought a pair... didn't know they existed otherwise...:-) So I guess not all ads are bad, and if they are providing a service to us, they are not all that bad, such as the ones here are pretty unobtrusive, all except those fdang o'le talking ones that give me a heart attack every time...:-)

I really don't mind the ads, to be honest.  I still have a choice whether or not I benefit from them.

And my presumption is that Pete gets paid (not "profits" mind you) for just displaying them.  Ultimately I believe it's up to us if we kill the ads or not.

So as long as they're being displayed, I don't think there's a problem as far as ads.

In the case of keeping the site alive, God bless 'em.
