MORRISVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A small aircraft crashed short of a runway and knocked down power lines Sunday night at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, airport and federal officials said. One man was killed.
The plane, a Beech Bonanza registered to a Raleigh company, crashed about 9:15 p.m. on approach to the airport, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen in Atlanta.
The plane pulled down power lines, and emergency workers had to wait for utility crews to declare the area safe before they could approach the wreckage, airport spokeswoman Karen Dunton said.
One man was found dead once crews reached the plane. Authorities saw no signs of other victims, though emergency workers were still combing the site early Monday, airport spokeswoman Mindy Hamlin said. Federal investigators were expected on the scene later Monday.
Authorities didn't immediately know the man's name.
The accident caused a power outage of about an hour at the airport. Flight operations were halted for about half an hour, airport spokeswoman Mindy Hamlin said. Dunton said some air traffic resumed once power was restored.
The plane was registered to FCA Inc. of Raleigh and had taken off from Wilmington, Bergen said. A phone number for the company could not immediately be found early Monday.
