What is it with the US during WWII (and even after). Did they have any imagination at all??

Maybe to standarize everyting? ;D

Well I think its because the U.S. military was undergoing modernization, and every piece of equiptment was the first of its kind, so all of them were the M1.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the M in the M1 Garrand was for Military, not model.

Actully the famed Sherman tank of WW2 was the M4.  But there was a pre-war tank known as the M1.

The Thompson was first made in the early '20's, but I don't know if it was called the M1 then.  Maybe ST is correct in that it was named the M1 when WWII broke out ???
(Something I didn't know until I was reading up on the Thompson a short while ago. It could be switched to "semi-auto" :o. Why don't we ever see this mode being used in all those movies etc etc.)  ???

By the way, who makes the 'small' M1 carbine? (I could look it up, but then I'd have to move, wouldn't I.... :D)

And.......was the "automatic" version of the M1 Carbine (ala Korea) called the M2??

You have to remember its not the armys fault, its the pen-pushing civil servants who suffer a complete lack of imagination as well as humour ;D

You suprise me Brensec!  Unless you're talking about some variant that I'm ignorant of, the Sherman was the M4! :o

Shame on you! ;)
