New Virus- Sasser Worm

Postby Iroquois » Tue May 04, 2004 6:05 pm

Looks like thoes college dropout computer programmers are at it again. The new threat goes by the name of Sasser Worm. Although the worm itself does little damage it is running amuck across the Net and could from the sounds of it, could aid attackers in accessing your machine.

Read more about it here or download the removal tool here.

Haven't had it....
but I got my first in 6 years the other day. Yesssss! lol
It was a netsky virus..... but our anti virus software sorted him out. The little rotter tried loading our info on the internet ::)
As for the sasser I thought it was really interesting.....
It was released on the 1st May.....

By the 4th there were already 3 more editions :o

Microsoft and the anti virus companies had made tools and stuff to battle it by MAy 3rd 8) 8)
In just a few days it had infected up to 1 million computers and had wrecked several important places such as banks and the European thingy, can't remember its name.

A form of terrorism in my opinion. It actually would not suprise me if there really were proper terrrorists funding this... - attempting to bring down the West. Trying to trash the stock exchange etc.... I'm sure it'll prove very effective some day.... and I hope that never happens.

its peoples complete lack of knowledge of these things that cause a problem. The experts constantly hammer on about not opening files from people you dont know and being really careful from those you do know. But people still do it. I think someone should spend more money on virus awareness that way alot of things would run alot easier on the internet.
side note after being away for 30 hours i got home to find 150 junk email in my yahoo account, of those 103 were viruses

rumours go that the guys that made Netsky also made at leas one version of Sasser. at least someone put that info in it...

to let all those stupid people know that they relesed a patch for the security hole on 18 april

There was an article in the c't magazine (IT magazine in german and dutch edition) which told about guys making a trojan and asking a few 10.000s $$$ for the IP adresses of these machines and the software to use those machines for anything the buyer wants (DDOS, sending spam and other illegal activities)
this is quite a problem in europe as most broadband ISPs have a minimal upload speed of 128kbit, you need a few 100 computers to slow a system down with a DDOS attack... about 1000-1500 for a complete DDOS kill

From a post of me in the Sim-Outhouse forums:
I've already had that worm, right after I had re-installed Win XP.

Fortunately, you can kick it off your system very easily, even without a virus scanner.

Hi Craig...!
This Sassa thingy was spread by people just being "connected" to the Internet, with no fire-wall protection in place. I don't think you got it through opening E-Mails...?
...a "back-door" job... :'(...!
Fortunately for me it only affected Windows XP users...
guess what I run... ;)...?.....Tee Hee...LOL...!

Cheers Craig...!

agreed there is little that can be done with this one and experts are warning it could be around for years.
But i am still getting hundreds of the others spread by email a day.

If I get a suspicious e-mail which could be worm or virus, how can I delete it without opening it. When I click on the suspicious mail to delete it I am essentially opening it, correct? This true with Outlook Express but not with MSN or Yahoo whereby I can simply click on the Box without opening up the document.

Hi Ben...!
You would be surprised how young these little toe-rags are.... ::)...!
There are lots of clever little school boys out there, who have nothing better to do with their sad little lives than create mayhem for the rest of us... >:(...!

Cheers Ben...!

Aye I've just noticed he has admitted doing it.
Well done Police. Keep it up.
They should lock him up for a few years and ban him from computers from the computing world for at least 30 years.
18 000 000 computers so far........ in just 1 week ::)
I'm not sure what a auitable punishment would be. ::)

lock him up? nooooo. This kids gonna be sued big time by many many companies. I say let the dumb ass enjoy the benifits of having to pay back millions for the rest of his life, much more fitting than free accomadation at the germans expense

At least the caught the s.o.b. These kids think they're above the law. Too bad that just about every industrialized nation is planning tough crackdowns on cyber terrorism. Basically these kids are now being lumped into the same lot as Bin Laden and Arafat. Comforting thought for them I'm sure.  ;D
