ELK CITY, Oklahoma - Tom McAnally lost and found $11,000 in one day. The painter from Tennessee had completed some big jobs and hadn't been home to make a bank deposit.

He paid for some gasoline and went on to a job site, but when he felt his hip pocket, he realized the money wasn't there.

"Imagine jumping off a cliff or getting to the bottom on a roller coaster," McAnally said. "That's how it felt."

He went back to the convenience store where he bought the gas and found that two men, Danny Sipes and LeRoy Gaines, had found the money in the parking lot and turned it in to store manager Jimmy Clark, who gave it to police.


"Sgt. Bob Turner picked up the money, took it back to the police department and locked it in the safe," police Capt. Dan Fife said. "Shortly, here comes this distraught man, inquiring about a bunch of money."

It was easy for McAnally to identify the money because little blue paper dots were mixed in with the bills. He keeps the dots in his pocket for good luck because his wife once won $100 with a scratch-off lottery ticket after she tore a blue dot out of a newspaper.

McAnally said he is amazed he was able to recover the money, which would have been a sizable chunk out of his monthly expenses.

"Finding that much money would be a temptation for anybody and they are three honest people," McAnally said.

He said he'd like for the men to be recognized for their actions.

"Those folks are awful honest," McAnally said. "I believe that good things always come around. Something good for them will come out of this."

It's stories like this that restore my faith in human nature. Believe me, that takes a lot of restoring at times.

I note that Mr. McAnally says he would like these men recognised for their honesty. He makes no mention of rewarding them himself. I suggest that $500 each wouldn't hurt him & would be better than any recognition.

What would You have done?

Being brought up to be honest I would most likely have taken the money to the police station & made sure I got a receipt for it. I ain't quite that trusting.

Thats just what I would have done.
Yeah, I agree Hagar he should have given each of the men a reward, thats only the proper thing to do.

Its always nice to hear a story about a good deed. They seem to be few are far these days, although a couple of my friendly local journalists will be getting the reward for a good deed tomorrow Best not to ask

Thank God there are still some honest people in the world, speaking of that I'm going to be honest about this, if it was me, 75% I would've turned it into the police, but if I was really short on cash and really needed that money or just wantted something really bad, I might of turned in part of that money and kept some for my self.

I would of turned it in. I find wallets every once in a while and I turn it in.  :)

Since I work at a grocery store, I've found wallets, purses, credit cards, IDs, and cash in the past. I turned them all in without a moment's delay

I found $5,000 (and change) about 5 years ago. It was in a leather 'satchel' but had no I.D. or any indication who belonged to it.

I thought of taking it to the Police, but thought that maybe it would 'reduced' somehow. So I rang them and told them I found a "large sum of money" and if anyone was looking for it, to call me.

It took about three hours for someone to call me and correctly identify the satchel and get the amount right within a few bucks. Lucky me..........................

But the bloke did give me $100 for my trouble. He was very glad to see it. He said he never expected to see it again. He said he only contacted the Police on the "off chance".
