Feel free to move this if you need to, mods.  I think it's valuable enough for everyone to see, not just those who go to the software forum, so a link from here to there might be handy...

This is a excellent page giving instructions on how to remove spyware/adware, and prevent it from coming back.  It also recommends freeware programs to remove spyware and tells you which spyware removal tools are actually disguises to ADD spyware to your system.  If you have questions about spyware or adware, or need links to places to learn even more about it, then this is a great read.

to get rid of spyware:

get and install ad-aware
get and install spywareblaster
get a firewall that monitors outgoing traffic (zonealarm for example) and deny anything suspicious outside traffic

If more people would do this i'd be very happy....

Every machine where I have to clean spyware gets at least ad-aware and spywareblaster. The decision for the firewall is made on my opinion about the computer knowledge of the user...

I use the following programs to stop spyware.
Spyware Guard
Spyware Blaster
and Spybot S&D.

Great anti-spyware programs and they are freeware too. The first two actually prevent spyware from even being downloaded. You can download them at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/index.html

One note about Spybot S&D, the person that made has not updated it for ages, so you need to get this aswell so that it updates:

The Spybot S&D website shows updates as of March.  Yes, that's a while ago, but there's an update feature on the interface that allows you to search for updates.  Every once in a while you find some new ones.

However, if you practice safe computing, you're not going to have THAT much to worry about.  Plus, the spyware that it DOES pick up are the more common ones anyway, so as long as you get rid of those you should be fine.

Is anyone else infested with this annoying pop-up when browsing the Simviation Forum...



I've installed and run Ad-aware, Spysweeper, Zone
Alarm, etc, etc, but still this pop-up is driving me round the twist.... ...!
It appears over every page I turn, and there doesn't seem to be any way of stopping it, (the "NO" button has to be pressed every time it appears).... ...!

I don't want/need to download and install this c**p, Windows Media Player does all I need...!

If the CEO of Macromedia was standing beside me at the moment, and I was was armed with a broom handle...guess what... ... ... ...?

Hi Foz. Why don't you simply install Flash Player. This is a free download. It's not spyware & is necessary to get the best out of many websites.

Hi Foz Your comparison is not accurate. You obviously don't have Flash Player installed or you wouldn't get the offer to download it. It's not compulsory & you can refuse it by clicking No. The choice is yours. Install Flash Player or keep getting the offer. It strikes me you are being typically obstinate & cutting your nose off to spite your face.

PS. This might be the reason you're not bothered with the annoying "talking lady". The ad might need Flash Player installed to work properly. That's no excuse. I don't see why you shouldn't suffer like the rest of us.

Fozzer, Flash player isn't some spam thing.  It runs certain graphics programs that appear on web pages.  It's harmless and in most cases, very helpful.  I would advise getting it.

As a regular forum visitor I would be very surprised if you haven't seen her (or heard her to be correct) at some time or other. The ad might not need Flash Player at all. This was only a suggestion as I don't think Yabb requires Flash

....that is what I found confusing... ...!
The annoying pop-up Macromedia Flash Player ad only appeared on the SimV Forum, never on any other Site/Forum I browsed... ...!
...I've pressed the "yes" button now, (you will be delighted to know.  ;) ..), and although nothing seems to have been installed, at least it seems to have frightened the little buggar off... ...!
...back to normal again... ...!

Paul, just you wait.  Flash is a great tool, and you're going to see things that you missed on various sites in the past.

Most of the animation you see on websites is flash.  Of course, you haven't been seeing it, so you'll only start to notice it now.  Good stuff!

(There are some fun and easy flash games around too...you'd be amazed how often your system will use it!)
