Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines

Postby FLYING_TRUCKER » Thu Apr 22, 2004 6:02 pm

I try to watch this movie at least once a year...I think it is awesome!

I would think most of you have seen it.

Would there be a collection of those aeroplanes used in the movie that could be downloaded?

Was the movie filmed in England?

Did Ozzy, Fozzer, Hagar, Rifleman, Fly2e, and Silent Exploder (Doctor Shoe) actually play in the movie ;D ;D ;D ;DLOL??????

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I've actually never seen the movie. It's about WW1 isn't it. Try Sim-Outhouse. They have three excellent WW1 Triplanes for FS2004.

Hehe. A real classic. I can't speak for Fozzer but I wasn't in the film. :o

The full title is "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes.". It's loosely based on the air races held before WWI. The book is actually better than the film. IMHO
The sewage farm on the airfield boundary plays a big part in the proceedings & the antics of the German contingent reduced me to hysterics. ;D

My father-in-law & brother-in-law both worked for Miles Aviation & were involved with building some of the replica aircraft used in the film. The Bristol Boxkite was one of theirs. http://www.filton.flyer.co.uk/bristol/survboxgaspp.htm
Some of these aircraft are still flying today in various parts of the world. I believe the Shuttleworth Trust has some, their Antoinette being another example. I'll have a punt round later to see if I can find a full list. I'm not sure there will be too many examples for FS.

PS. I think it was mostly filmed in England but I'm not sure of the location. The airfield & starting point for the race was based on the famous vintage aerodome at Brooklands. I believe the beach shots were done at Brighton.

Never seen the film. I did recently find a movie rental shop that has the 'Battle of Britain' but it's a 2 hour drive from here :(

I heard that some of the planes in the "Magnificent" movie were not real and that in some scenes were suspended from cranes.  Obviously the one that is flying low over the water with the pilot climbing all over the outside of it.  Great movie!

If you really want to see these old classics they're readily available & not that expensive to purchase.  http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008PC0Y/103-5416078-9624660?v=glance

I reckon that "Magnificent Men" is well worth $10 of anyone's money.

You could probably get them cheaper if you look around.
The Great Race is similar to Magnificent Men with many of the same cast but it's about motor racing.

That reminds me. This one is on display at Shoreham. It was built for & featured in the film but never flew. The Lee-Richards Annular Biplane. http://www.thearchiveshoreham.co.uk/aircraft_restoration.htm

Doug you are right...it is a classic.
I can watch a movie like that every year and still get enjoyment out of it.
For those simmers who have not seen this movie it is well worth the watching...I believe the time frame is about 1909.
I wish there were more movies like this rather than all the war and violent pictures they seem to want to make to-day.
Now what character would I have played in that movie.....HMMM :) :) :)LOL

Cheers...Happy Landings....Doug

No luck on a list of aircraft used in the film yet. I did find this interesting site with the actual types used in that period. http://www.thosemagnificentmen.co.uk/machines/

You've got me interested now. It's some time since I've watched the film & it's well worth adding to my collection.  Apparently the DVD includes behind-the-scenes footage with information & shots of the aircraft. I'll go into town later & see if I can get it.

Here's something I'd forgotten which many people, especially the youngsters, might not realise.
American Saturday morning cartoons soon had a 'big race' show called Hanna-Barbera's Wacky Races that consisted of repetitious races with funny cars/planes/boats/you-name-it. If I remember correctly, the hero was a Dudley Do-Right type and the bad guy Dick Dastardly a rip-off of Terry-Thomas' character, complete with a sniveling dog assistant (named Muttley) modeled on Courtney, Terry-Thomas' crazed assistant in crime played by Eric Sykes.

Don't get Magnificent Men if you don't like corny British humour. I read a review by an American critic. He was complaining that the characters are stereotypes & the whole thing is over-acted. He obviously missed the point. That's exactly how it's meant to be. LOL ;D

PS. My local video shop doesn't even have it listed. I suppose I'll have to get it online.

I popped over to Shoreham this morning & took a couple of shots of the Lee-Richards Annular Biplane replica. Unfortunately it's in a corner of the hangar & they didn't come out too well. This gives you some idea of what it's like.

British humour is a little different, but that's why it's so great ;D

I just finished ordering both of 'em :D

I followed those two links to Amazon that Hagar posted and quickly placed my order.

I got both 'Battle of Britain' and 'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines', plus $7* shipping came to about $29.

'Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines' was $10.49.

I got both on DVDs ;)

*I'm an impatient person so I had to have it shipped second day ;)
