A 68-year-old glider pilot has died after a mid air collision with another glider near an airfield, police said.
The accident happened in a field near Lasham Airfield, at Alton, off the A339 in Hampshire.
The pilot has been identified as a 68-year-old man from Fleet, in Hampshire.
The second pilot, from Ascot, in Berkshire, managed to parachute to safety and escape unhurt, Hampshire Police said.
He was currently being interviewed by police.
Three investigators from the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) in Farnborough were at the scene where wreckage from the light aircraft was said to be scattered in the field.
A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: "There was an incident near an airfield in Hampshire, two gliders were involved.
"We don't know what exactly happened or the involvement of the two gliders.
"We do not know the specific sequence of events."
Twenty fire-fighters had attended the incident, along with Hampshire Police and Ambulance.

I'd guess a combination of good training, good reactions and a dollop of luck...

Just heard about this on the radio news. Very sad.
The secretary of our local gliding club was recently killed while towing a glider in a Piper Pawnee. Not heard a report yet. The aircraft was burned out & it's quite likely they will never know what caused it. Gliding used to be such a safe pastime. :'(

:( It is horribly sad :(, but I always remind myself that a pilot is far more likely to die in car crash than he is in a plane.
Amazing how some people survive air accidents though.

Regards,
Ben :)
