Body Peircing Gone Too Far!!

Body piercing and tattoos make way!

The latest fashion trend to hit the Netherlands is eyeball jewelry.
Dutch eye surgeons have implanted tiny pieces of jewelry called "JewelEye" in the mucous membrane of the eyes of six women and one man in cosmetic surgery pioneered by an ophthalmic surgery research and development institute in Rotterdam.

The procedure involves inserting a 3.5 mm (0.13 inch) wide 1 piece of specially developed jewelry -- the range includes a glittering half-moon or heart -- into the eye's mucous membrane under local anaesthetic at a cost of 500 to 1,000 euros ($1,232).

"In my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people," said Gerrit Melles, director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (www.NIIOC.nl).

The piece of jewelry is inserted in the conjunctiva -- the mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids and front of the eyeball -- in sterile conditions using an operating microscope in a procedure taking about 15 minutes.

"Without doing any harm to the eye we can implant a jewel in the conjunctiva," Melles said. "So far we have not seen any side effects or complications and we don't expect any in the future."

The Rotterdam-based institute, which develops new ocular surgical techniques in corneal, cataract and retinal surgery, developed and patented the jewelry made with special materials and the surgical procedure.

The institute, which carries out the procedure in cooperation with an eye clinic near the city of Utrecht, said it has a waiting list for people who wanted the implant.

That is really gross!!! I would never do anything to risk my eyesight, not even wear contact lenses!
Some people are a mighty bit daft in the head methinks :P

I totally agree. I have a friend who had laser surgery over 10 years ago. It was when it first came out and now he is almost totally blind. He lost his job, had to take up learning Braille and will have no eyesight in a year. He has gone to over a dozen lawyers and all said he has no chance of winning because he signed many documents saying not to hold the surgeon liable!

Why would you want to do something so stupid. Your eye constantly blinks to clean itself and now you are putting some foreign object in there to do what, impress somebody or "be different"?
Give me a break!

Just my opinion!!

personally i would never get anything like that, but then again i hate things being shoved in my face let alone people messing with my eyes. Way to risky in my opinion and i see some serious side effects long term

:o

The thought of shoving contact lenses into my eyes make me cringe, let alone having diamonds stuck to my eyeballs ::)

It make the criminally stupid easy to identify...and they bear the cost of identification. :)

I firmly believe that if something does not ALREADY have a hole in it, that it was not meant to have a hole in it!!

(Dave, where did you find that article?!)

Why don't you like contact lenses?
If you know how to clean them properly and how to put them in,you'll have the best way of improving your eyesight. You just need to get used to it.
I wear mine for over one year now and I couldn't imagine a life without them.

But I wouldn't go farther than that. That eyeball piercing stuff is just disgusting.  :P

I've seen it all now. I never went much on the idea of body piercing but this is vile & disgusting. What idiot would consider doing that to themselves? They must be out of their tiny minds even to suggest such a thing. Makes me feel ill just to think about it. :o

Eyes are far too valuable to mess around with. You only get one pair & they have to last a lifetime. Some poor souls are not so lucky & I'm sure they would find this highly offensive.

PS. Are you sure this is not a sick April Fools joke?

I used to know a kid that did that sort of stuff, he also worshiped Satan.
The funny part of the whole matter, is that his father was the local minister.

Personally when it comes to students and body piercing, I'm in favour. I feel that crucifying students for not doing their homework is perfectly reasonable ;D ;D ;D

Just had to respond to this one.

That is gross, percings are in general. Personally, I believe that people do that stuff only for shock value and nothing eles. Ignor it and it will probably go away.

The ones in the eye are going way to far. Tounge ones are gross too, especially after I found out why girls get them. If you don't already know why, don't ask.  :P :o

I wonder how this body piercing affects their employment prospects. I see all sorts of mutilations including pierced noses, lips & eyebrows that must be potentially dangerous in certain jobs. I remember one JCB driver lost a finger when his perfectly ordinary wedding ring caught on something as he jumped from the cab.

It might be seen as discrimination now but my old boss had 2 stipulations when hiring male employees. No funny haircuts or ear rings. I dread to think what he would have thought of  pierced eyeballs. :o
