Never thought about that... good thing we have Meinas!
I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty the incident at Chernobyl was overwhealmingly due to human error.

Havent you guys seen what we do with nuke waste? We put it a mile and a half down in the earth under Nevada in sealed containers; we ain't ever seeing the stuff again.

It is too much of a risk to blast into space. If it blows up you kill lots of people and render an area totally un-useable for atleast 10,000 years.
