RENO, NV, March 18
Pilot parachutes out of biplane shortly before crash north of Reno

The pilot of a single passenger aircraft reportedly parachuted to safety shortly before the plane crashed north of Reno Wednesday morning.

The Sky-Bolt Bi-Plane, crashed near Crystal Canyon Road in Cold Springs around 7:00 AM.

Witnesses say Pilot Ross Lauden was doing aerial tricks when the top wing either folded or broke off. The plane began to drop from the sky, but Lauden was able to parachute out moments before it crashed.

Witnesses say Lauden was up and walking when rescue workers arrived.

Lauden was airlifted by Careflight to Washoe Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.

Obviously a well trained pilot, he knew the risk of the manuvers he was doing, so he wore a chute.
Or is it common practice to wear a chute while flying in a bi-plane?
