Just how much does a teacher make?

Mark, please get in on this.  I was looking at some info for my son's high school and it said the average teacher salary was over $75,000 per year!  The average admin salary is over $115,000!  I had always pictured teachers as being overworked and underpaid, but if this is the case, I'm not so sure.  In fact, I remember hearing of a teacher shortage because they get paid so little.  That is more than a fair salary for the job, I think.  I may have to go back to school.

Hiya Kevin. My wife's friend teaches science for 4th and 5th graders and she can hardly make ends meet. Then again it is for the NY City school system and they are constantly threatening to go on strike. She has actually had to go out and purchase supplies sometimes for her students because there is no money in the budget! I asked her why she would do that and she says that she just couldn't deprive the kids of learning. Talk about a dedicated teacher! Somebody at the top is making out pretty well!

Personally I feel that teachers do get the rough end of the pineapple. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes (marking homework, preparing lessons, correcting tests, parent/teacher evenings etc etc) that eats into our own time.... I've been known to be working till 2AM and then be up again at 6 to go back to school. I've even had weekends without sleep in the exam period (mind you this was exceptional, someone broke into the staffroom and stole the exam papers two days before the exams, so I had to write a completely new set)!
Frankly my wages are a disgrace. Bus drivers and dustman here earn more than me (fortunately the missus has a fabulously well paid job ;D).
Here in Hungary the situation is something of a disgrace, for example I DON'T get paid during holidays, I only get paid for the lessons I teach. We're not allowed to go on strike during term time, and could be arrested for trying!
We do risk our lives from time-to-time, I've been threatened in class on a few occassions, and even had to disarm one young gentleman who was waving a knife that appeared to have been crossbred with a cutlass in my general direction. He wasn't expelled, just told off >:( ::)
If you think I don't earn my wages, come and do my job!
Two groups of people never get paid what they're worth. Teachers and nurses.
Sure you get bad ones, but then thats because most of the people in teaching these days are there because they can't get other jobs, and schools are desperate.

Mark

Ps. I have to by my own board markers etc ::)

Mark, your right its tough out there for many teachers..But I think it pretty much depends on where you teach, I know I lived in a placeit was a  small comunity the teachers were paid min 80,000 and they still wanted more. like housing paid for and  other things.. It is sad that some teachers take advantage of what they get. just like any job I guess ???

Alas Wendy there are always those who only give a monkeys about themselves.
Frankly there is no way I could claim I'm in it for the money ;D I do my job because I love it, and I get a huge buzz when a student passes an exam or wins a competition, and I know I helped them.
I did have a nice experience on Monday when I got back to works after two weeks being sick. A whole class mobbed me and wanted to know would I be taking the class again this week, turns out my stand-in wasn't as nice/good/popular as yours truely. I was rather flattered :)

Here in Queensland, Australia teachers get a fairly good deal, better than most people straight out of uni.  They basically just recieved a payrise and a first year teacher recieves $40 000 AUD a year and that amount increases to $60 000 within the next few years.  To put it in perspective a first year pharmacist only gets about $20 000.  And they get holidays and weekends off as well.

I wouldn't recommend it Wendy ;) Although the handcuffs do come in handy on the weekend ;D
A friend of mine is a teacher in London (I won't say where), but his third week on the job he got stabbed in the chest by a 12 year old student. This student wasn't even kicked out of the school (Tony Blairs wet-blanket sociologist policy!)
My friend did recover, and transfered to a much better school, but it still affects him :(
I got attacked once by two students who had caused a vast quantity of trouble and I'd hauled them up to see the Headmaster, and get their parents in for a chat :P. They hadn't found out I'd done three martial arts and boxing before trying to attack me one evening, since then I've had no problem with discipline ;D Silly children ::) Oh and the police thought it was REALLY funny, they hadn't had such a good laugh for ages. Not since the guy burgling Spar had got stuck naked half-way out of an air-vent... but that is another story ;D
