The Chile and Bolivia "Crisis"

Most of us probably don't know it, but down in Chile trouble's 'abrewin'. Bolivia now want's the Atacama desert, so they will no longer be land locked, and can trade with other nations. However, Chile fought Bolivia for that stretch of land, and won back in the who knows whens. To just ask for it now would be like Mexico saying, "Yeah, you know Texas, New Mexico and California? Yeah, we want that back." Sorry! We (being the only Chilean here) fought for it, and we won it! Tough noodles! And of course, everyone hates Chile because she adopts European customs instead of staying nowhere which is where most of the other South American countries are. Peru is definitely with Boliva, Argentina was with 'em, and who knows who else has joined.

I'm ashamed to admit that I know nothing about this. It strikes me that it's much the same as the main cause of most other conflicts around the world throughout history. Fighting over land.
A little dispute between Argentina & Britain over the Falkland Islands or Malvinas springs to mind - or Spain's claim to Gibraltar but maybe we won't go there.

Fantastic idea! I'll just be fitting out a small ship and sailing off to the Carribean. I know I've a letter of marque somewhere around here.

Give it away? Never!
And suppose Argentina want Punta Arenas. We (they) will give them that too?

Actually, the US ambassador said, "This issue is strictly between Chile and Argentina, period." It came out pretty funny in spanish though. Probably because there wasn't any oil or anything in the equation. I would've thought the US would take Chile's side, since the US just signed a free trade agreement with Chile.
Pinochet is a whole other topic!

Isn't this how the whole gulf war thing got started? Iraq thought that Kuwait was actually theirs and decided to take it back?

Of course, all these boundaries are comparatively recent. No doubt those lines drawn on the map are the result of countless individual conflicts over a considerable time period. Logically & morally the land belongs to the first settlers to make claim to it & their descendants, whoever they might be.
