Oh yes, the Evil Empire rolls on, viciously attacking the poor people who rip off copyrighted commercial products.
Basically, like everything, there's no such thing as a free lunch.
If you don't protect what's yours, then you lose it.
During well publicized congressional proceedings, an important Senator asked an aid to "go xerox this document". Xerox - the company - wrote to him nicely, appreciating the mention of the company and xerographic process, but the correct usage would have been to "make a photocopy on the Xerox copier"...

When will the RIAA ever opens its eyes? :-/
Don't they understand that filing these lawsuits are NEVER going to stop file swapping?
Seriously, anyone can still file swap for as long as CD-RW's exist and for as long as empty CDs purchased from a store exists.
One person can make a copy of a music album or a collection of different kinds of music in a blank CD. Then that person will hand that CD down to his/her friends. His/her friends will then copy that CD [or some of the files in it] onto another CD and they will hand down the new copy to their other friends. And the chain reaction will forever go on for as long as CD-RW's and Blank CD's and MP3's exist.

in their defense they have every right to do this, it is stealing and whether or not it works to end it altogether is a side issue, they just wanna prosecute those stealing their music. Side note they have noticed a huge drop in swapping online since they started this

I find you appreaciate the music much more when you've actually paid for it out of your own pocket.
Kahatu, in another thread you have viciously attacked thieves, file swapping is stealing. No two ways about it.

Here's my opinions....
The reason why I don't have much music is because typical music cds range from 15-20+ dollars. Say there's a cd with only one song that you like, are you willing to pay $20 for it?
If there was a system where you can purchase individual songs, or if CDs didn't cost as much, more people would be able to afford it

I think the subject of this topic says it all. "The Recording Industry". I never understood why anyone would think they are entitled to something without paying for it. This seems to be a modern concept.
I might be old-fashioned but I was taught that taking something without paying for it is stealing & against the law. There is another thread in this forum right now on the subject of thieves & what people here think of them.
Any industry expects to supply something people want & to receive payment for their product, hopefully making a profit in the process. That's how business works. Whether a particular industry as a whole is guilty of overcharging for its product is neither here nor there.

While, yes, the recording industry is overall systematically maraudering people's pockets, it's still illegal to do it. I buy my CDs and use KaZaA to download hard to find remixes and classical songs.

With this topic out in the open again I would like to ask everyones opinion.
I personally go to a local music store that speciallizes in trading. I go buy a CD usally at half cost because it has been used but in excellent condition I then rip them so i can put them on my mp3 player and then at times I trade them in again for other CD's. I also get awesome deals on Ebay. And at times do the same rip them then trade for others.
Now wouldn't this fall into the catagory of "swaping"?
After all I'm buying a CD that the artist already recived payment for once. But they don't get it when I buy it.
The same would go for yard sales, garage sales etc.
Does that mean that if you no longer like a cd,record, tape etc. You must destroy it? Because if you resell it or give it away your guilty of "swaping". Same would hold true to movies (dvd, vhs).
If this kind of action contines we all will end up having to purchase all our media from one "controlled" source and be prosecuted if we were to give the stuff we don't want away, sell it, etc.
As a matter of fact does it stop at "media", how about appliances? You shouldn't be able to resell a toaster because the manufacturer won't get anything for it, no "royalties". Thier case in court could be "Because so and so gave this person this used toaster, we might have loss the sale of a new one"
CARS! You can't sell your old beater unless you give the manufacturer a portion of the amount, they might have loss the sale of a new one.
Books and literature- Librarys will be outlawed, the author only gets money per book sold!! Not for everytime it is read, or for each person who read it!
Think about it!!! ;)

Hmmm. You make a good point. I haven't given this much thought but the second-hand business seems to come under the category of barter. I want something you have & pay you for it with something you want in return. Whether this is money or goods doesn't matter. The deal is not normally subject to tax as that has usually been paid when the item was originally purchased. (This is not always the case.) Barter has been going on throughout our history.
I think this is quite different to purchasing something, either new or second-hand, then duplicating it (maybe several times) before bartering it for another similar item - ad infinitum. You can't have your cake & eat it.
