Well Woodlouse. What I said on that post is my view. You can keep your view while I keep mines.
The people who commit fraud I would always clasify them as low-lifes or fraudsters or blackmailers.
You're right crooks can also be those who commit fraud and such.
For those who rob banks or jewelry stores, I would classify them as bandits.
Long ago, sometime in the 1990's, there was a group of guys who were always called "The 30-Second Bandits". Or was it 60 seconds?
Anyways, these guys earned that nickname because whenever they broke into a bank there was always one guy holding a watch to keep track on how many seconds went by. Durring that time, the others had to steal anything that seems valuable. When the time runs out, they leave.
Oh, and yes they did use firearms [but they were empty. no time to shooting anyways]. And just like the Sterling Thief, they always threw away their tools-of-the-trade. Eventually, they were caught. But they'll be free soon because they never fired a shot or harmed anyone [duh...no bullets and no time].
Correct me if I'm wrong, but:
There was also a group of guys who were professional thieves. They broke into a museum that housed the Stone of India and the Saphire Stone and such. When they were caught, it was near impossible to sentence them to jail because of all the publicity they recieved.
Think about it. Those guys are rich, young, well educated, and so on. So they became celebrities of their own crime.
Edit: Pardon me. It wasn't called the Stone of India, it was called the Star of India.
Gee, I always wonder why I know so much about this topic.
