Earthquake in Iran

There's been a big earthquake in Iran. 6.2 on the richter scale. With an estimated 15,000 killed. It happened nearly 24 hours ago. Why am I the first to mention it here?

tragic, mother nature seems to giving us all a hard time at the moment.

(have u noticed how America gets a earthquake at 6.5 and only a few are killed, but Iran gets the same quake and 15,000 killed?)

I think it has to do with the structures. I'm sure most of the casualties were caused by buildings collapsing. Anyone remember how Seattle looked after it was hit by that 7.1 quake a few years ago? I don't remember any buildings collapsing, but the streets were littered with bricks.

I didn't even see any type of housing damage in the area where we lived at the time, although we had our hous checked out underneath just to be on the safe side

Historical city completely destroyed. news footage gives the impression some madman buldozed the whole place

It seems like a real bad situation all over the world
Airplane crashes, war, earthquakes, mudslides etc.
Maybe we should start looking toward the sky for some white horses?

The same thing happened a few days ago  in southern California, 6.5 on the Richter Scale, two people died.

The Iranian government now thinks as many as 40,000 people have died!  Thats a crazy amount of carnage...poor people!

The United States is sending about 200 experts to help and the USAF is starting supply drops...

Very saddening.  Those in Californina are lucky to have new quake-resistant technology.  We had a 5.1 quake here in Central New York last year...felt cool, but probably not cool when your house collapses.  My house just shook in very fluid-like waves.

Those poor buggers in the Middle East! They just don't seem to be able to take a trick, do they!  :(

We've had Earthquakes here up to 8.0 on the Richter Scale with little or no damage. There was one a few weeks ago, about 100 miles from Sydney, it was about 6 if I recall. But then I suppose it all comes down to how old the buildings are and how they are built in the first place.  

I heard the City in question was 2000 years old! Is that true?? (I'm at work and don't have access to any news program or papers, although I could check the Net, but I don't like net news pages!!)  ;D

Brensec's comments made me realise just how little we in the "civilised" West know about these ancient civilisations in remote (to us) parts of the world. I did a search for the Iranian city of Bam which was flattened by this earthquake. It seems that it is (or was) indeed a historical city & citadel more than 2,000 years old.

Apart from the terrible amount of casualties & loss of life - I'm not sure it would be possible to rebuild rare ancient artefacts like these. This makes the disaster a loss to the world, not only Iran.

i agree, this world is finally getting what it deserves. . .
