One thing puzzles me about the human race. Well, several things now I come to think of it but I'll stick with this one for now.

I agree with Pippin.  The only in America statement is technically correct as Native Americans are by their very definition native to the America's.  A statue of this size to the gentleman would therefore be slightly out of place in central London.

I believe it is about time that the US acknowleged publicaly the huge importance of Native Americans to their culture.  This is the American way of doing this and therefore a positive thing.

I agree with the motive behind it but I still think this could only happen in America. I mean no offence but it's your way of doing things. Big is beautiful & all that. I would rather see the mountain in its natural state & can only think of it as vandalism on a massive scale.

I always understood that Mother Earth itself is sacred to the Native Americans. I wonder if anyone thought to ask their opinion before breaking out the dynamite.

I once visited the Grand Canyon & the sight took my breath away. This is something I shall never forget. I had the great good fortune to choose the part under the care of the Hualapai (pronounced Walupie) tribe. No barriers, no hotels, no McDonald's, nothing but unspoiled Mother Nature in all its majesty.

No photo I've seen ever did it justice. My guide told me that just being there was a rare privilege that I would never forget. He said that I might wake up in the night in many years time & be awestruck & humbled by the experience. I didn't believe him but he was right & I still do. There could be no greater monument to anyone than that.
